Semifinal Standouts from Marsh Madness

Some performances were by well known players in the Louisiana ranks while other standout performances were by newer players to the scene. In this PHLA exclusive, we will look at standout performances during semifinal week in Lake Charles.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1394530' first='Daijon' last='Leatherman'] -</strong> Even in a loss, Leatherman showed that he is the best big man in the state. The junior scored 18 points despite double and triple teams just being active on the floor. He was very good at tracking rebounds for offensive boards and he gave a Master's class in gaining position on the block. His play showed why he is a top player in his class and a much valued prospect. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1601913' first='Matthew' last='Weaver']</strong> - Weaver led St. Martin's Episcopal to the title game with a masterful 24 point performance. His ability to score at all three levels was apparent early on. He began with a shot from three. Weaver commenced to score on contested layups and mid-range jumpers while finding teammates as they cut to the basket for layups. Definitely a game he put his stamp on. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1218738' first='Jovanni' last='Perez']</strong> - Perez was the leader of the Crescent City squad as they made their way to the Division IV Select championship. When the Pioneers needed a play, he seemed to make it. His 12 point, 6 assists performance was filled with a couple of And-1 plays with one that sealed the outcome. The way he played on Wednesday may be a preview of how he plays in the championship. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1105593' first='Jordan' last='Mathews'] -</strong> When his team needed him the most, Mathews put his team on his back and went to work. His 12 second half points were scored against one of the best post defenders in the state. Mathews showed excellent footwork and body control as he faced up and attacked from all areas below the free throw line. His play was paramount in the 52-48 Warhorse victory. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Chivas Lee - </strong>The Liberty junior guard had a very good day from behind the arc in the Patriots dismantling of Southwood. Lee went 4-4 from three showing that he can make teams pay with open shots. He also played well on the defensive end creating turnovers by the Cowboy guards. Shooting like that will come in handy as Liberty plays St. Thomas More in the Division I Select final this weekend. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The semifinals have been exciting and drama-filled for the most part.
