By now you know that we have a new No. 1 ranked prospect in shooting guard Jalil Bethea Jalil Bethea 6'4" | SG Archbishop Wood | 2024 State #5 Nation PA (Kentucky commit). Right behind Bethea at No. 2 is combo guard Ahmad Nowell Ahmad Nowell 6'0" | PG Imhotep Charter | 2024 State #36 Nation PA (UConn commit).
Today we want to dig deeper into the Pennsylvania Class of 2024 rankings and review five players who used the camps and showcases in August as a well as September’s fall ball action to increase their recruiting stock significantly.
Below is a review of five southeastern Pennsylvania 2024 “stock risers” you need to keep an eye on for the remainder of this fall and into the 2023-24 season.
114 to 15… Bahsil Laster Bahsil Laster 6'5" | PG Academy of New Church | 2024 State PA – 6’5″ / Academy of New Church / NJ Scholars EYBL / Combo Guard: After an outstanding HG Elite Camp in August and a string of extraordinary performances this fall, Laster (14 ppg. and 7 rpg. in 2022-23) has skyrocketed up our 2024 rankings. This slasher wing’s skills have taken a significant step forward. He now appears ready to ascend to the No. 1 option for ANC this winter and become a feared 3-level scoring machine in the FSL. Laster holds offers from Lafayette, Rhode Island and NJIT.
60 to 28… Kevin McCarthy Kevin McCarthy 6'4" | SG Episcopal Academy | 2024 State PA – 6’4″ / Episcopal Academy / Philly Revolution / Shooting Guard: This elite wing shooter was a 1st Team All-Inter-Ac selection after the 2022-23 season. Still, McCarthy’s climb up our latest 2024 rankings comes from the more polished handles and dribble drive skills he displayed over the last three months. These days McCarthy is a more well-rounded scorer who can also use the dribble to create for teammates. His ability to pass out of double teams has improved as well. He holds offers from Farleigh Dickinson and Army.
93 to 37… David Fridia David Fridia 6'6" | PF Allentown Central Catholic | 2024 State PA – 6’7” / Allentown Central Catholic / PA Coalition / Small Forward: Fridia has developed into much more than thelong and bouncy transition phenom we watched in previous years. His bag of dribble moves is impressive. Off the dribble he can now create space for an open three. Or he can use a quick crossover to get to the cup for a flush. Fridia’s ability to finish at the rim with either hand has also taken a step forward. Fridia is an improved spot up shooter too. At the other end, Fridia has become an intimidating shot blocker.
320 to 54… Kyle Shawaluk Kyle Shawaluk 6'4" | SG Perkiomen Valley | 2024 State PA – 6’5″ / Perkiomen Valley / PSB Philly / Wing: Back in June Shawaluk destroyed the competition at Philly HS Live and he has not looked back since. Over the last three months Shawaluk has continued to score in bunches by draining threes from all over the court, blowing past defenders for lay-ins and getting out in the open court. Because of his high basketball IQ, Shawaluk rarely takes an ill-advised shot and is an excellent passer. Shawaluk’s intensity, non-stop motor and positive energy are intangibles college coaches will love.
102 to 77… EJ Campbell EJ Campbell 6'0" | CG Spring Ford | 2024 State PA – 6’1″ / Spring Ford / East Coast Cyclones / Combo Guard: Campbell’s tremendous 2022-23 season (13.2 ppg.; 1st Team All-PAC; 1st All-Area; D1-6A runner ups) pushed him near the Top 100 in the July edition of our 2024 rankings. The more polished floor general skills Campbell has exhibited over the last five weeks have placed him inside our Top 80. Campbell could always score and distribute as a two-guard. However, the poise, patience, and basketball IQ he has shown in the half-court lately proves he can run as a pure point guard too. Plus, he still can drain threes from anywhere along the arc. Campbell holds an offer from Rider University and East Stroudsburg (D2).
