Martin stepped in for Hoisington and wasn’t overmatched by the competition. His offensive production was up and down, but he showed he has the athleticism to be a guard to watch in the future. He’s long and explosive and can handle point guard, shooting guard or even small forward next season. Based on what we’ve seen this summer, his shooting percentage will improve and he’ll become more of a scorer next season.

A longer ball handler at the point position, Martin looks even taller than the 6-foot he’s listed at. He plays with a lot of springiness, dribbling the ball high in the back court, probing the defense and looking for teammates. He weaves through traffic with a tight handle and pushes aggressively with his eyes ahead. Martin is a versatile guard who shoots and passes well, but his handle makes it all work.

There weren’t a lot of small school players at the Midwest Grind Session, but Martin certainly turned some heads. He played point guard or off the ball about equal amounts for the Padres this weekend. When his team needed a play, it seemed like it put a lot of trust in Martin. He plays longer than 6-foot, using long arms to cross up defenders or get shots off. He can get hot and connect on multiple threes in a hurry. Martin was a gamer who gave his all to keep the Padres competitive.
