Recruiting Report: Corey Baker (2018)

Corey Baker (2018) is a true point guard. After speaking, for just a short period of time, with the Groveport High School 5’11” point guard, it’s simply obvious that this kid knows how to run the show. It’s not that Baker speaks about the game in complicated ways, he actually does the exact opposite. “Just getting everybody involved and scoring when I need to score,” Baker told Prep Hoops, when asked about his best attributes as a player. While the answer seems almost too simplified, it’s actually a perfect description of how he operates on the hardwood. This spring for OH-NOVA Tillman, the #2 ranked 17U team in Ohio, Baker has excelled in the point guard role by trusting his wings with the ball. While Jerome Hunter and Isaiah Speelman create with the ball, Baker allows them to do so by spacing the floor and being patient. Yet, he’s always ready to take it into his own hands by going off the dribble and finishing strong. The high-IQ ability of Baker has drawn the interest of a number of programs. “I have a lot of, like, D-III and D-II right now that have contacted me and sending me mail and stuff ... Ashland is standing out. My most recent is Marietta. Then I’ve got a lot from Cedarville. I have been getting a lot lately from West Virginia State too,” Baker said. Baker hasn’t taken visits to any of those four schools quite yet. He did later mention that he plans on taking visits, but hasn’t decided upon when and where. When the time comes to make the college-decision, Baker is looking for “fit.” “How it feels with the coaches. And then how it feels with the school, education and things like that,” Baker said. https://twitter.com/HWBDHoops/status/811751333766303747 The trusted floor general is excited to continue building upon vocal leadership skills, ball-handling, and shooting this coming year with Groveport. Bottom line though, Baker just wants to win ball-games. Whether it’s scoring “when needed” or doing “whatever, it really doesn’t matter, as long as the team wins,” Baker is a flat-out competitor. So, while he’ll do much more scoring in the winter than he’s doing with OH-NOVA on the Adidas Gauntlet, it’s okay with Baker, because that’s what the team will need to compete in the Ohio Capital Conference.
