The MSL-Buckeye player of the year, Schmelzer had an excellent Junior season that ended with conference and district championships. Another forward who relies on physicality, Schmelzer simply uses his size and strength to bully defenders in the high school season. With good footwork with his back to the basket, Fairfield Union looked to give Schmelzer the ball on the block to try and score. He’ll have to continue to improve his foot speed and outside shooting to get ready for the college level but his production speaks for itself.

Then it was Schmelzer’s turn as the MSL player of the year started dominating inside the paint with turnaround jumpers, two foot finishes and some sweet passes to open teammates. With the size and strength of Fairfield Union’s frontcourt, New Lexington was no match in the paint. With both Caleb’s back next season, Fairfield Union is the early favorite to repeat as district champs in 2023-24 but right now they are focused on Tri Valley in the regional semifinals.
