Tyhler Shields
Often in the shadows of the rest of Paulding County’s high-octane backcourt, it was Shields who really was a driving force and a consistent factor throughout in the Patriots’ come from behind 63-48 win over Darlington. Tyhler hurt the Tigers with his dribble penetration, getting downhill to finish with either hand. He used his low center of gravity to get past defenders as he exploited Darlington’s lack of rim protection. I really liked what Shields brought defensively as well. He’s a pesky defender in the press and did a good job of cutting off the sidelines whenever the Tigers tried to advance the ball. Shields tallied 11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals.
Jones provided the daggers in the fourth quarter. Down 41-40 heading into the final period, the Patriots outscored Darlington 23-7 to race away with the road win. Kahlil sank three threes in the deciding quarter to put the game out of reach. He finished with a game-high 16 points, 9 rebounds and 1 assist.
Javonne came off the bench in attack mode, slashing his way to the rim as he drew fouls. Williams posted 12 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, making just two field goals as he went 8-14 from the line. Williams’ ability to beat his defender off the bounce put Darlington in a bad spot as they struggled to contest his drives without fouling.
Last I saw Frantzyr, the Patriots’ all-time leading three-point shooter was busy pouring in 35 points against North Cobb Christian, dropping jumper after jumper. On Wednesday, the standout football player’s points all came in the paint, finishing with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 5 steals. Frantzyr keyed the press, converting turnovers into easy transition layups. His athleticism hurt Darlington, able to use his quick second leap for putbacks and able to change direction for steals and downhill drives.
D-Man had a great first half, controlling the pace of the game and getting what he wanted on offense. He scored 13 of his 16 points over the first 16 minutes. D’Marion used his speed to find points in transition, snapping off eurosteps to evade defenders and finish with floaters. He managed to go 5-8 from the foul line. Floyd also added 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Bell had 8 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 blocks. Two hoops came on drives while another was a dump-off And-1 finish. Jack is a physically strong guard that can absorb contact. With Darlington lacking impactful size, Bell is relied upon to be one of the team’s top rebounders and more versatile defenders.
