Five Takeaways: Edison vs. Cypress

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Huntington Beach — Edison high school hosted its annual post-Thanksgiving Showcase which featured a number of solid programs from Orange County and beyond. We were able to attend the final two games of Friday's action. Below are five takeaways from Edison's 48-40 win over Cypress.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4>[player_tooltip player_id='1502885' first='Kaz' last='Hampton'] should draw NAIA and Division 3 Interest</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The 6-foot-1 junior jumped out to a quick start in his first game of the season as he dropped 22 points, including five three-pointers to lead the Chargers to an eight-point win. Hampton's three-point shooting ability is what will get him recruited at the levels we mentioned, but he's also a steady decision-maker with the ball in his hands and a tough-minded defender.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4>Dane Johnson is an intriguing big man in Orange County</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The 6-foot-6 forward had an impressive varsity debut after dominating on the junior varsity level as a sophomore. Johnson is a big-boded center who has the soft hands and touch around the basket that comes naturally to big men. Johnson came off the bench and scored nine points with six rebounds, and while his size and offensive game are what will get him on the floor, becoming a better defender and rebounder will keep him on the floor.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4>Edison the favorite to win the Surf League?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Coach Rich Boyce always has the Chargers in position to compete for a league title; will this season be the same? Probably. Edison has a handful of good pieces that fit well into its system but what we're curious to see is if their depth can hold up their end of the bargain and produce on a nightly-basis.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4>Jonas Hanson is a highly productive forward</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Cypress' multi-positional senior is a high motor, tough and aggressive wing/forward whose energy and effort on both ends of the floor make things happen. At 6-feet-4 and a strong 190-ish pounds, Hanson is an inside-out scoring threat who can drive his way to the rim and finish through contact and can also knock down perimeter shots off the catch.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4>Cypress might look different come December 26th</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Centurions had a handful of players on their bench in street clothes, all of whom could play a significant role once the CIF Southern Section mandated transfer sit out period ends on the day after Christmas. Cypress is well coached and a solid team as-is, but it will be interesting to see how that dynamic changes come Dec. 26.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
