With “official” PIAA high school basketball activities kicking off on November 19th, the start of the Central Athletic League hoops schedule is just a couple of weeks away.

With that in mind, below is a preview of six players (Presented in alphabetical order.) we view as the front runners to win the 2022-23 Central League Player of the Year award.

[player_tooltip player_id='991391' first='Sam' last='Brown'] – 6'3” / Senior / Lower Merion / Team Final EYBL / Shooting Guard: Brown's 2021-22 was a roller coaster ride. His electrifying start included a 30-spot vs. Reading. He then missed a long stretch because of an ankle injury. Brown (pic above) returned in early February to help LM win the District 1-6A title and advanced to the state semis. This season Brown (Penn commit) will ascend to the No.1 scoring option for the Aces. The smooth shooting lefty will excel in that role. When he is not draining logo distance threes, Brown (16 ppg. last year) is scoring or distributing off the dribble. He is sneaky quick and athletic, so he also turns steals/deflections into easy buckets. Brown is one of our co-favorites to win POY.

[player_tooltip player_id='1119137' first='Jackson' last='Hicke'] – 6'5” / Senior / Radnor / Prim3 Tim3 / Shooting Guard: Last year this Princeton commit was a 1st Team All-Central League and 1st Team All-Delaware County selection. Hicke averaged 16.5 ppg., scored 20+ on numerous occasions and posted a season high of 38 points. Hicke's monster junior season pushed Radnor to 23 wins, the District 1-5A championship game and the PIAA state tourney. For his senior season Hicke appears to have gotten taller and added muscle to his frame. Plus, his off the dribble scoring skills have improved significantly, making him a true three level scoring threat. Along with the previously mentioned [player_tooltip player_id='991391' first='Sam' last='Brown'], Hicke is our co-favorite for POY.

[player_tooltip player_id='1379478' first='Jaden' last='Jauregui'] – 6'2'' / Senior / Strath Haven / PSB Philly / Combo Guard: Jauregui is a lefty who in 2021-22 ranked among Delaware County's top five in scoring average at 16.9 ppg. He can get buckets in multiple ways and from all over the court. Jauregui is most effective when he uses the three ball to set-up his ability to attack the rim off the bounce. His quickness and tight handles provide Jauregui with a smooth stop and pop game. Jauregui is also a decent interior threat. He will dive to the blocks, establish position, and score off a post-up. Jauregui is an excellent rebounding guard as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='1185982' first='Max' last='Koehler'] – 6'1'' / Senior / Garnet Valley / Chester Storm / Combo Guard: Koehler's senior season will mark his second consecutive as GV's number one option. In 2021-22 this change of speed guard who can get to the rim and score with either hand averaged 12 ppg. Koehler (York College commit) owns a polished floater game and will knock down the open threes too. He thrives in Garnet's system featuring extensive off ball movement and quick passes. Lastly, the emergence of teammate Jake Sniras (2025) will keep opponents from doubling Kohler this year, providing him with easier looks.

[player_tooltip player_id='1382970' first='Nadir' last='Myers'] – 6'2” / Senior / Upper Darby / Philly Pride Select / Point Guard: This wiry lefty finished last season ranked among Delaware County's top three in scoring average at 19 points per game. Myers is a score first lead guard whose primary weapon is the three-ball (67 3PM last season). His shot features deep range as well as a snap trigger. Thus, defenders need to pick him up at half court. In 2021-22 he recorded multiple games of 5 or more triples. Included in Myers' outstanding junior season was a 28-point (6 threes) outburst vs. Garnet Valley; as well as 26 points (5 triples) against Haverford and 25 points vs. Kennett.

[player_tooltip player_id='1382973' first='Alex' last='Seidman'] – 6'0” / Senior / Haverford / PSB Philly / Combo Guard: One of the most respected long-range snipers in SEPA recently committed to Catholic University (DIII). Before he heads down to Catholic, Seidman (14.5 ppg. last season) will be the focus of the Ford's offense this winter. Seidman's astonishing range and quick release make him lethal from behind the arc (71 made threes in 2021-22), especially as a trail shooter. He is an underrated athlete who can also slide over to the point guard spot. There he can score off the dribble or facilitate for teammates. In August Seidman was named the ZGXL Grassroots Stock Riser of the Year.

With “official” PIAA high school basketball activities kicking off on November 19th, the start of the Central Athletic League hoops schedule is just a couple of weeks away.
