The Gamepoint Fall HS Showcase has been perennially one of the top team preseason showcases in Southern California, giving this writer and coaches an opportunity to evaluate both teams and talent in advance of the high school season.

This year, the 14th installment, was one of the best to date.

I had a chance to watch games on each of the three days (Sunday I split my time between the showcase and the Pangos Frosh/Soph Camp), and in the first of my reports, I will talk about the next 10 performances on hand based on the games I watched. Key phrase: I WATCHED.

Gerry Guerrero, 6-3 2023 G, San Ysidro

Guerrero is going to help a college program, and possibly at the D1 level before it's over. The Mexican national team product has nice length, plays with good pace and can shoot it from well beyond the college three.

Ashaun Mitchell, 6-2 2025 G, Vista

As far as sophomore playmakers go, Mitchell is rising to near the top of the list. A slippery guard who can score it and distribute it with equal aplomb, Mitchell made impressive plays in drive and kick and out of the pick and roll, and is evolving into a knockdown shooter off the catch.

CJ Coleman, 6-4 2025 W, Vista

It took Coleman a second to find his bearings this weekend (dribbled into pressure several times to start), but when he simplified the game, you saw his value. A wing with good size for a sophomore, Coleman drilled corner threes off of his teammates' dribble penetration or found driving lanes and finished through contact.

Gavin Guinn 6-2 2025 G, Vista

Guinn, who transferred after a year at San Diego HS, showcased why he's one of the class' better lead guards. He plays within himself and at his own pace, does a good job getting to his spots in the midrange, and is a very capable scorer from 15 feet and in off the dribble. He's streaky from three, and needs to do a better job creating separation off the bounce, but he's definitely a solid prospect.

Parker Jelsing, 6-0 2023 G, La Costa Canyon

Jelsing had a pair of solid games on Saturday in a close loss to San Ysidro and against St. Augustine. He's a strong scoring guard who gets into the paint and finishes through contact and can hit threes off the catch or off the dribble out of pick and roll. He plays with an edge and competes on both ends.

Xair Mendez, 6-1 2025 G, Montgomery

Mendez provides the athleticism and potent scoring off the bounce that balances what the Sanchez Brothers bring to the table with their pace and IQ. At times, he plays a little too fast and gets himself in trouble driving into traffic, but his finishing ability in the halfcourt and transition are hard to ignore.

[player_tooltip player_id='1502812' first='Tony' last='Duckett'], 6-1 2024 G, Carlsbad

Duckett and Hall both missed Friday night's game, but returned Saturday and scored the ball with ease in the win against Santa Fe Christian. A wiry and long combo guard, Duckett can score it in the paint (really crafty finisher) and from midrange (very strong pull-up) and like his teammates, is a solid shooter off the catch. Defensively, he does a good job anticipating in the passing lanes which allows him to score buckets in transition.

Tristan Guzman, 6-0 2024 G, Carlsbad

Guzman impressed this weekend with his shooting, which has become far more consistent over the past few months. He knocked down several threes and hit clutch free throws in the win over Del Norte, while providing his usual feisty on-ball defense and high-IQ passing.

Patrick Perez, 6-5 2023 W, Christian

Perez is one of the region's more unheralded seniors. A smooth scorer with good size as a combo wing guard at 6-5, Perez can get downhill and score through contact, or hit shots off the catch with range that extends to the college three. At times, though, you want him to be more assertive on a team that lacks a ton of scoring options.

Alex Cervantes, 6-7 2023 WF, San Ysidro

This was the best I've seen Cervantes play for San Ysidro dating back to the summer. The long, wiry swingman looked assertive attacking the basket and finishing above the rim, while also scoring around the basket and knocking down a couple of threes from the wing off the catch to boot. Cervantes, when engaged, is an active and assertive rebounder with a quick second job that allows him to get rebounds on the second or third tip. If he can replicate this effort moving forward, he's an unsigned prospect to watch.

[player_tooltip player_id='994931' first='Martin' last='Gumwel'], 6-11 2023 C, Rancho Christian

After a rough first-half against Balboa, the Pepperdine commit rebounded with solid rim protection, rebounding and defense that helped key the Eagles comeback, during which time he scored on a tip jam dunk, had several big rebounds and hit two critical free throws, while also setting some strong screens to spring [player_tooltip player_id='994955' first='Kollen' last='Murphy'] for scores.

Bailey Chambers, 6-4 2023 G, Rancho Christian

Chambers stepped into a bigger role this weekend for the Eagles with lead guard [player_tooltip player_id='1434418' first='Rodney' last='Brown'] on a visit to Oregon State, but looked comfortable handling the ball at the point. The lefty is an aggressive slasher who once he gets downhill is a threat to score through contact, but also does a good job passing the ball off of his penetration and is an athletic on-ball defender.
