The class of 2022 runs deep in San Diego county with many players turning in great final seasons to cap off their high school careers, a lot of these guys though do not get the recognition they deserve and are making big contributions to their squads this year so I’m going to be taking a look at some of the members of the 2022 class who have impressed me when watching them this year that deserve more attention and an opportunity to possibly play at the next level

Jakari Carr (2022) | 5-10 G | El Camino |

Carr has been a very big piece of the Wildcats offense his senior year especially when he’s had to step up and be the guy for El Camino when they were shorthanded. Carr is very fast and has a quick first step in getting past defenders easily and is disciplined in transition offense knowing when to pull the ball out and when to attack, along with this Carr is a tough finisher with good touch around the basket. Carr also hits timely jumpers for the Wildcats coming up with much-needed threes and mid-range jumpers to spark the El Camino offense. Carr brings a lot of energy to the defensive end making life tough for ball handlers picking up from full at times and constantly applying pressure. Carr has made a big jump this season and has become a player any coach would love to have running the guard position. Carr and the Wildcats look to be a dark horse heading into the CIF playoffs.

[player_tooltip player_id="971236" first="Markees" last="Williams"] (2022) | 6-0 PG | Helix |

Williams may not be as much of a sleeper as the rest of this list but colleges are sleeping on him. The game just looks like it comes easy to Williams who has become one of the best point guards in San Diego County. Williams has the ability to change the pace of the game to his liking and is extremely proficient from all three scoring levels. Williams is a smooth scorer hitting jumpers off the dribble from mid-range and from three at a high clip as well as being a strong finisher. Williams’s offensive skill set allows him to draw in defenders and show off his ability to be the floor general for the Highlanders as he runs the offense and creates looks for his teammates as his passing really helps the flow for the majority of the Highlanders offense. Williams always looks very confident with the ball in his hands and plays like an extension of his coach on the floor, he should be getting a lot more love from colleges as he has the tools to succeed at the next level as he is one of the highest basketball IQ players in the county.

Lucas Gordon (2022) | 6-8 F | San Marcos |

Gordon has made huge strides for the Knights since joining their program and looks to be the final piece of the puzzle for a San Marcos team that is becoming the favorite to win the Open Division CIF title. Gordon is a very active defender making points in the paint hard to come by using his size to block shots and grab steals that turn into big dunks. Gordon has nice touch around the rim and will finish in the post but one of the biggest things Gordon contributes to San Marcos is his ability to be a stretch big for them and extend the floor. Gordon’s smooth jumper and catch-and-shoot ability allows the Knights to have a starting 5 that can all hit from deep which has led them to be one of the best three-point shooting teams in San Diego. Gordon has stepped up in big-game situations for San Marcos to play his best ball against some of the top teams in the county showing off his potential when he gets more touches than usual. Gordon already holds an offer from the University of Saint Katerine but don’t be surprised to see more colleges offer him soon

Evan Record (2022) | 5-9 G | San Marcos

Record is another senior on San Marcos who has been having one of the best three-point shooting seasons in the history of the school. Evan broke the Knights record for most threes in a game with a huge performance hitting 12 threes on 71% shooting earlier this season and has been one of the best shooters in California. Record is a high-volume three-point shooter but still finished the regular season shooting at a 37% clip. He has one of the fastest releases you’ll see and can pull from off the dribble, screens, and from deep. His shooting prowess allows San Marcos to have a guy that can’t be helped off of making their offense a lot more dangerous. Record has also shown flashes of his ability to be the primary ball-handler at times for San Marcos and this along with his elite shooting ability will make some coaches at the next level consider giving Record a shot despite his smaller size.

[player_tooltip player_id="971232" first="Marc" last="Begin"] II (2022) | 6-2 G | La Jolla Country Day

Begin is a big physical guard having a great senior season for La Jolla Country Day. Begin is a very strong finisher adept at utilizing euro-steps and using his body to create separation when driving to the lane to make him a problem when driving to the rim and he consistently finishes through contact. Begin is also very confident in his shooting ability and will take and make tough pull-up jumpers, he also has shown that he is a good three-point shooter hitting from deep with regularity. Begin is also a very good defender and has an elite sense when it comes to jumping passing lanes and racking up steals racking up 8 in a single game this season. Due to him being a bigger guard Begin is able to match up with almost any guard and has shown off the athleticism to separate him from the pack throwing down dunks in transition and getting some big blocks on the defensive end. Begin has helped set the Torreys up in a good spot in the D1 playoffs and have the pieces to make a run. College coaches should definitely start looking harder at Begin who has the physical tools to play at the next level

Xavier Rubio (2022) | 6-1 G | Eastlake

Rubio has quietly been one of the best scorers in the county averaging 21.3 points and having huge scoring outbursts this year with 37 and 42 point performances. Rubio is a very crafty finisher being able to switch hands in the air to finish layups and utilizes floaters to finish in the paint as well. Rubio is also a knockdown shooter hitting threes at volume and will shoot from far behind the three-point line. When it comes to scoring Rubio just looks smooth, he creates himself space of the dribble for pull-ups and looks comfortable taking shots from anywhere off the dribble or the catch. this smooth style of play also helps Rubio be a stat sheet stuffer for the Titans as he has shown off the ability to be a great playmaker for Eastlake routinely throwing dimes to open teammates and he is always crashing the boards creating second chances. Rubio has the skills to play at the next level and his Eastlake team will be a tough out in this year’s playoffs.
