Nobody did it...until tonight.

The Westminster Academy Lions handed North Broward Prep their first loss of the season, 53-47. The Lions took a 39-26 lead into the fourth quarter and were able to hang on to secure the victory. Westminster won despite not having 2022 sharpshooter [player_tooltip player_id="546221" first="Aidan" last="Abell"].

This game was up for grabs during the final eight minutes. A few more outside buckets from [player_tooltip player_id="1060261" first="Guilherme" last="Tesch"] and North Broward Prep might have overcome a tough first three quarters. I would add this was probably the best atmosphere I encountered all season.

Standouts:

[player_tooltip player_id="709227" first="Jaylen" last="Carey"] - Westminster Academy

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="709227" first="Jaylen" last="Carey"] scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds (unofficial) in the victory. I thought the 6-foot-8 forward was effective with his spin move into a right jump hook. Carey did a great job using his athleticism to create space in these situations. In addition, I thought Carey used his mass on a few occasions to get deep into the paint against [player_tooltip player_id="712115" first="Justin" last="Abson"]. His ability to create that room was just enough to score over the terrific rim protector. Where Carey could do more damage is to continue to stretch the floor. I think that could make him very difficult to stop given his natural size.

[player_tooltip player_id="1301705" first="Alexander" last="Lloyd"] - Westminster Academy

2025 [player_tooltip player_id="1301705" first="Alexander" last="Lloyd"] was the best player on the court on this night. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard scored 18 points using his explosiveness to get to the rim. Lloyd can simply get past his defender and explode to the bucket. Similar can be said when he’s in the open floor in transition. A defense in flux is going to have a hard time adjusting to Lloyd on the run when he’s going to his left or right. From there, Lloyd can explode off one foot and score above the rim. He’s a superstar already with time to grow.

[player_tooltip player_id="712115" first="Justin" last="Abson"] - North Broward Prep .

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="712115" first="Justin" last="Abson"] is one of the best post defenders I’ve seen this season. The 6-foot-9 forward had at least 11 rebounds and four blocks against a powerful Westminster Academy front. Abson did a great job holding his ground and anticipating when to jump. He is patient and rarely puts himself in bad position on defense. Abson can compose himself and block multiple shots during one sequence. He also has the athleticism to block shots as a trail defender. He added 12 points on offense, mostly right around the bucket.

[player_tooltip player_id="1065431" first="Michael" last="Kalina"] - North Broward Prep

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="1065431" first="Michael" last="Kalina"] had a fairly solid game with 12 points. I thought the 6-foot-1 guard did a nice job with his scoop and score on his way to the basket. Kalina had good body control and ball English in these instances. I also thought he found [player_tooltip player_id="712115" first="Justin" last="Abson"] with a few nice feeds underneath. A couple of turnovers, and team turnovers, is where Kalina and company could clean up. He battled though when the game could have easily ballooned in the fourth quarter.

[player_tooltip player_id="955571" first="Adren" last="Roberts"] - North Broward Prep

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="955571" first="Adren" last="Roberts"] finished with ten points and hit two 3-pointers. The 6-foot-5 wing is a versatile scorer than can use his frame and athleticism to get to the basket. I also like Roberts’ confidence to jut out and pop an outside shot. He brings a lot of value on both ends of the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id="814984" first="Rickey" last="Ballard"] - Westminster Academy

I thought [player_tooltip player_id="814984" first="Rickey" last="Ballard"] showed his versality during two critical plays. The 6-foot-7 wing hit a 3-pointer and drove past long-armed [player_tooltip player_id="829406" first="Maximus" last="Fuentes"] for a nice bucket off glass. On defense, Ballard offers a ton of problems with his length, especially around the perimeter. The official book had him with seven points. Ballard could be key as Westminster Academy gears up for the playoffs.

For any South Florida Prep Hoops news or information...please contact Michael Costeines @Steins_23 on Instagram or follow him on Twitter @Mungertown_Mike23.
