This week, I spent some time checking out some online streams including a couple of battles in Fort Wayne with Blackhawk Christian taking on Bishop Dwenger on Tuesday and Marion taking on Fort Wayne Northrop on Saturday. Then, Friday night featured a battle of two top-75 seniors in Indianapolis with Danville hosting Tri-West. Check out some of the top guard performers from this week of basketball.

Player Evaluations

Devin Campos (Fort Wayne Northrop) - 2022 6’1” SG

Campos is a do-it-all type of player who made a ton of plays in the win. On the defensive end of the floor, he plays touch man defense, and he seemed to come up with several steals off of deflections. He also hustles extremely hard on the glass, and he sees the floor incredibly well. Campos ended with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 6 steals in the stat-stuffing win for the Bruins. If he can play like this, Northrop will have a real chance in Sectional 5.

[player_tooltip player_id="870219" first="Jalen" last="Jackson"] (Fort Wayne Northrop) - 2022 6’0” PG

In this one, Jackson showed why he is one of the top seniors in the state and why he will make an impact at UIC next year. He is a force in the lane, and he always looks to get to the rim no matter when it is that he touches the ball. Not only does Jackson dominate in the paint, he does not force things and looks to set up his teammates as well. Jackson had 34 points, 10 boards, and 4 assists in the win, and one of the top scorers in the state showed exactly why he is just that.

Cubie Jones (Marion) - 2022 6’0” PG

Jones is a smaller point guard who quite literally did it all for Marion in the loss. He is a playmaker with good vision and good passing, and he can also hit shots from all over the court. Additionally, he played top-notch defense and was very good on the glass. Jones was on pace for a triple-double late, but he would end with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 6 steals.

[player_tooltip player_id="1158191" first="Taden" last="Metzger"] (Marion) - 2024 6’2” SG

Metzger is a young shooting guard who creates his own shot and knows where to get for his shot. He can hit from the outside, and he drives it hard to the hole. Metzger was just 1-4 from the outside, but he has a nice shooting stroke. He ended with 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. He will be a fun player to watch develop in the next couple of years.

Drew Miller (Tri-West) - 2024 5’10” SG

Miller is a smaller shooting guard who knocked down shot after shot in the loss. He was really the reason why Tri-West was able to stay in the basketball game. Miller went 4-6 from three for 12 points, and all four of these triples came at clutch times. It will be interesting to see Miller grow over the next couple of years.

[player_tooltip player_id="958411" first="C.J." last="Pieper"] (Fort Wayne Dwenger) - 2022 6’1” SG

Pieper is a quick guard who did struggle shooting it in this one. He lived around the rim, either finishing strong, drawing contact, or getting to the foul line. He also rebounded the ball very well, and he was able to set up his teammates with some nice passes. Pieper ended with 12 points and 7 boards in the win.

[player_tooltip player_id="1273327" first="Jayden" last="Schmenk"] (Fort Wayne Northrop) - 2023 6’0” PG

Schmenk is an incredibly quick guard with a knack for making plays on the defensive end of the ball. He jumped passing lanes and got deflections which led to four steals. He also seemed to always look to get out and run on the fastbreak as he is an incredibly smooth finisher in transition. Schmenk ended with 11 points and 4 steals in the win.
