Week 13 Standout Senior Guards

<p>2022 has started with a bang for these senior guards lighting it up across Texas. So let’s look in on some of the top performers by 2022 seniors who are leading their teams with break-out performances. This list will highlight guards from across the state, from 1A - 6A basketball programs. </p> <p>[player_tooltip player_id="1204025" first="Marlon" last="Carrington"] 6’3 Haltom - Carrington has been a big reason Haltom has reached a 15-8 record. The athletic Carrington averages 19 ppg and seven rpg. Last week he had back-to-back hot games against Paschal and Boswell, where he dropped 22 and 18. He can play a little at all positions at his size and length but excels in the backcourt, where he overpowers smaller guards. </p> <p>Cody Hayes 6’ Mildred - Hayes is a beast on the boards as a double-double beast at the point guard position. He averages 19 ppg and 10 rpg, which is hard to believe as a guard. Hayes is coming off a close win against Rice, where Mildred pulled out a six-point victory. Hayes scored 22 points in the win. </p> <p>[player_tooltip player_id="1156885" first="David" last="McKnight"] 6’5 La Vega - [player_tooltip player_id="1156885" first="David" last="McKnight"] is a bruising, massive 6’5 guard with a high basketball IQ who is the engine of La Vega’s 19-3 season. One of his successes is his efficiency around the basket, as he currently shoots 51% from the field. On Friday, McKnight chipped in 24 points against Robinson High School. McKnight is one of the best guards in the state and a frequent contender for SB Live’s Player of the Week. </p> <p>Eber Murillo 6’5 Snyder - It’s hard to fathom Murillo is averaging 68% shooting from the field. His hot shooting has powered his 23 ppg as a long, athletic leaper. Murillo went ballistic against Brownwood in a 17 point win where he went off for 39 points on an insane 84% shooting. This season has solidified him as one of the best on-ball scorers in the state. </p> <p>Anthony Cottrill 6’ McDade - Cottrill is the leading scorer for all Texas guards at 25.5 ppg. The guard is shooting a solid 58% from the field, with high marks from the guard position. But Cottrill is more than just a scorer. He’s an elite rebounder at his position for only being 6 feet. He brings down over 12 RPG, 3.3 bpg, and 4.6 steals a game, showing his two-way ability. In a 20 point victory over Waelder earlier this month, Cottrill dropped 20 points on 64% shooting. </p> <p>Stilton Mckelvey 6’2 Kashmere -Mckelvey does everything above the national average at his position. He’s a solid two-way player who currently posts averages of 18 ppg and six rpg. Mckelvey has quick instincts and is a faster player with the ball in his hands, constantly pushing the pace downhill.  Mckelvey is also averaging a very solid 2.7 spg, showing his defensive awareness playing the passing lanes. </p> <p>Trey Thompson 6’1 Reagan - Thompson is the best player on one of the best teams in Texas. He is a big reason behind his team's undefeated 10-0 district record and 24 - 4 overall. Thompson fills up the stat sheet with averages of 17 ppg, three rpg, four apg, and three spg. Reagan has a balanced attack on offense, but Thompson has come up big when needed. He has broken out for seven games of over 20 points and two games over 30. He can step up when his team needs him and transition to a facilitator when needed. </p>
