The Mid-Atlantic Basketball Classic, which holds events all over the DMV and VA area, came to Atlantic Shores this past weekend with a big event featuring some of the top teams from across the state. There were 7 games featuring teams from the 757, Richmond and NOVA area, and there was tons of talent in all classes and a lot of very good basketball games.

Here’s a look at part one of the many 2022 standouts from the event.

Mikel Miller | 6’1” WG | Atlantic Shores

Miller wasted no time getting the event started, as he went for an eye popping 42 points in the first game, a win over Deep Creek. The 6’1” senior was fantastic on both ends of the floor, being active in traps and getting steals both on and off the ball, he finished consistently in the open floor and at the rim and he showed the ability to make shots from the midrange and from deep as well. It was one of the more impressive performances I have seen all year.

Marcus Scott | 6’3” WG | Atlantic Shores

While Miller had a big game and Scott dealt with some foul trouble early, it’s easy to see why the two of them play so well together. Scott has the ability to play on or off the basketball, he makes plays for others and he has a good scoring package as well. He can fill it up making contested shots from multiple levels using his size and shot making ability.

Jashaun Frazier | 6’1” WF | Western Branch

Frazier is a two sport athlete who also excels on the football field, and it’s easy to see why as he is a big time athlete who makes plays on both sides of the ball. He can slash and finish at the rim with consistency, he’s a good defender on the ball and in help side and he thrives in transition. He made big plays throughout the game and was a big reason they were in their game against LCA down to the wire.

[player_tooltip player_id="1241903" first="Trey" last="Chapman"] | 6’4” WF | Manor

Chapman was huge for Manor in their come from behind win over Bethel, where the 6’4” wing dealt with foul trouble early but made huge plays in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter. He showed good finishing ability around the rim, he rebounded well in traffic and made plays on the defensive end too. He’s a versatile wing who can score it, make plays for others and defend and will be a good piece to look at as he plans to prep next season.

Markel Godwin | 6’4” WG | Bethel

Godwin is having a breakout season for the Bruins after missing all of last year due to the coronavirus, and much like his older brother he’s a big time shooter with good size. He moves well off the ball and knows how to get open, he has a high release and good arc on his shot and he can attack closeouts as well. He made timely shots throughout the game and was a big reason they were in it with Manor to the end.

Josh Askew | 6’4” WF | Bethel

Askew is a big wing who is aggressive on the offensive end and brings it on both ends of the floor, and he was always there when his team needed a bucket. He excels in pick-and-rolls and in transition where he can get downhill and finish at the rim, he shoots it well from the midrange area and he’s a good rebounder and defender as well. He came up big in the second half time and time again for the Bruins.

Collin Hines | 6’5” WF | Norview

Hines, whose brother was a standout at Norview and now is at CNU, is a do-it-all wing with the ability to impact the game across the board. He’s long and athletic and uses that to rebound and finish above the rim, he can make shots from the midrange and from deep and he brings it in their press and has good instincts on both ends of the floor. He’s the type of player that makes his team better across the board.

George Cutler | 5’11” PG | Cape Henry

Cape took a tough loss to Fairfax Christian, but Cutler showed why he’s one of the top available guards in the 757 as he made plays on the ball throughout the game. He’s extremely shifty off the bounce with good change of speeds and hesitations, he’s a strong finisher through contact and can score it in the midrange and he’s an excellent playmaker with good vision and feel. He finished with 15 points in the loss and made plays for others all game.
