I stopped by Coconut Creek High School for the afternoon slate of the Sunshine State Basketball Explosion. The event is run by Charles Hendrix.

Score rundown:

Coral Springs 77, Pine Forest 74

St. Thomas Aquinas 67, East Coweta (GA) 51

Westminster Academy 77, Benjamin Mays (GA) 65

Sagemont 76, Denmark (GA) 59

[player_tooltip player_id="546221" first="Aidan" last="Abell"] - Westminster Academy

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="546221" first="Aidan" last="Abell"] had a good game for Westminster Academy. The 6-foot-5 guard finished with 21 points and knocked down three 3-pointers. I thought Abell did a nice job scoring off the baseline using his size and athleticism. He often likes that spot on the floor and explodes above the rim. Overall, his length can be a factor from the perimeter or near the basket. He holds an offer from Stetson.

[player_tooltip player_id="1295940" first="Gregory" last="Spate"] - Coral Springs

2023 [player_tooltip player_id="1295940" first="Gregory" last="Spate"] finished with 18 points and a pair of 3-pointers for the Colts. The 6-foot-6 guard hit a clutch shot in the lane to propel the Colts’ comeback victory. Spate attacked the center of the paint and used his size and athleticism to hit a short floater. I thought it was a big moment after he settled for some outside shots earlier on. Spate did hit two 3-pointers. Credit 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="1065432" first="Jonathan" last="Fils"] with a nice game as well. The 6-foot guard finished with 16 points and two 3-pointers. Fils did a nice job scoring from all levels.

[player_tooltip player_id="963316" first="Markos" last="Myrtidis"] - St. Thomas Aquinas

2023 [player_tooltip player_id="963316" first="Markos" last="Myrtidis"] finished with 11 points and a 3-pointer. The 6-foot guard was clutch in spots and did a good job running the Raiders’ offense in the halfcourt. Myrtidis has a good handle and can score with either hand at the rim. 2023 Trevor Buxbaum was also clutch with nine points and two 3-pointers.

Cameron Gibson - Sagemont

2023 Cameron Gibson had his shot working during the night cap. The 6-foot-2 guard finished with 21 points and knocked down multiple 3-pointers. I like his form and backcourt athleticism. Gibson has helped Sagemont to a 10-3 overall record.
