The annual Henrico Holiday Hoops Tournament kicked off yesterday, with six teams from across the Richmond and Virginia area playing in three games. Here’s a look at part one of some of the many standouts on the day.

[player_tooltip player_id="1217449" first="Gray" last="Proffitt"] | 6’5” CG | Douglas Freeman 2022

Proffitt didn’t put up huge numbers from a scoring perspective for Freeman, but he’s as valuable as anyone to their success as he runs the show and provides mismatches for almost any team they will face. At 6’5” he’s their primary ball handler and continuously makes plays for others and runs their sets, he’s fundamentally sound off the bounce and can get to the rim at will and he simply makes everyone on his team better.

Grant Smith | 6’6” PF | Douglas Freeman 2022

It was actually my first time seeing Smith play, and the energy and positive impact he brings to the team is something you can’t ignore. The 6’6” forward plays with a tremendous motor on both ends of the floor, he runs the floor hard and attacks the glass on both ends of the floor and defensively he can protect the rim and he can switch and guard wings and guards too. Before fouling out midway through the fourth, he finished with a game high 14 points and likely had a double-double.

Justin Wilder | 5’10” CG | Deep Run

Wilder is a naturally talented guard who brings good quickness and scoring ability to his team, and he’s very tough to contain off the bounce. He has good end-to-end speed and possesses a good first step, he’s shifty and able to get in the lane at will and he can score it in bunches from multiple levels. He finished with a team high 10 points in their loss to Douglas Freeman.

[player_tooltip player_id="1163267" first="Zach" last="McCown"] | 6’2” WG | Deep Run

McCown is another threat for Deep Run as the 6’2” wing had a good first half against Freeman showing his ability to score it from deep and in the midrange. He has decent size on the wing and was very good working off the ball to get open, he has a quick release and good form and he knows how to attack closeouts and get to spots.

[player_tooltip player_id="1337246" first="Percy" last="Wyatt"] | 6’2” WF | Henrico 2022

Wyatt is the senior leader of this Henrico group that could surprise some people this year in the Richmond area, and he was fantastic for the Warriors in their win over Matoaca as he made plays in a number of ways and led them throughout the game. He played both on and off the basketball, he showed the ability to score it in a number of different ways and he used his length and athleticism defensively to make plays. He finished with 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals.

Matthews Elliot | 5’11” CG | Henrico 2022

Elliot was the x-factor for this Warriors group in their win, as he didn’t shoot or score the ball particularly well but he did a lot of things to help his team including making plays for others and bringing it on both ends of the floor. He set the tone with his aggressive play, he made great decisions with the ball in his hands and he made hustle and winning plays too. He finished with 5 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists in the win.

Jaden Walker | 5’10” PG | Henrico 2023

Walker had perhaps the best performance of the day in the three games, as he took over in the second half of their win over Matoaca and was absolutely outstanding from behind the arc. He’s a smooth lead guard who has good shift off the bounce and can make plays for others, he’s an excellent shooter from deep and he simply knows how to make plays. He scored a game high 29 points, scoring 19 in the second half, going 7-for-10 from deep and pitching in 3 assists.

Marcellus McLellan | 5’11” PG | Matoaca 2023

McLelland is another talented point guard in the Richmond area who is coming off of an injury, but you can see that he has a lot of tools to work with. He’s a smooth guard who can play on or off the basketball, he has the ability to create space and make shots from deep at an efficient clip and as he gets back healthy and knocks the rust off he’ll be a tough matchup for anyone. He finished with 15 points and 4 assists in their loss to Henrico.
