An athletic 6-1/6-2 wing, Johnson first caught our eye at the Top 250 in September, when he was using his length and athleticism to routinely get to the rim for tough finishes. He has carried his strong play into the high school season, leading the Blue Devils in scoring (17.3 points) and rebounding (7.2). His efficiency numbers haven’t been the best, but he has been tasked with a lot on this year’s Central team, which has led him to taking some tough shots.
Aaron Campbell Aaron Campbell 6'4" | PF Grinnell | 2022 State IA | PF | Grinnell (114)
Campbell first caught our attention when he grabbed 22 rebounds, including 12 offensive, in the Tigers’ season-opening win over South Tama. He hasn’t stopped rebounding since, pulling down 10.3 boards a night for Grinnell. He’s a bit undersized at 6-4, but he has a relentless motor, great hands, and a nose for the ball. His offensive game is still a work in progress, but few players in the state attack the glass as hard as Campbell does.
Calvin Jaworski Calvin Jaworski 6'1" | SG Grinnell | 2022 State IA | SG | Grinnell (120)
Another Grinnell Tiger who is a new addition to the 2022 rankings, Jaworski is averaging 17.7 points and shooting nearly 44% from behind the arc. A 6-1 guard who can score from all three levels, he’s also making an impact on the defensive end, swiping 2.4 steals a game.
Ayrondus Hodges Ayrondus Hodges 5'10" | SG Cedar Rapids Jefferson | 2022 State IA | SG | Cedar Rapids Jefferson (122)
The J-Hawks have been an excellent story this year, and Hodges is a big reason why. He’s averaging 13.9 points a game and shooting 52.4% from the floor. An athletic and quick 5-10 guard, he can get to the rim routinely, and he’s a strong finisher around the bucket. His perimeter shot is still a work in progress, but he can penetrate and get to the rim and the free-throw line at a high clip.
Ben Swails Ben Swails 6'2" | SF Clear Creek Amana | 2022 State IA | SF | Clear Creek Amana (127)
A 6-2 wing who is a strong three-level scorer, Swails has stepped into a primary scoring role for the Clippers this year, more than doubling his scoring average to 15.6 points a game. He’s shooting 55.6% from the floor and 42.9% from 3 and has shown the ability to get others involved as well, dishing out 2.6 assists.
Miles Dear Miles Dear 5'10" | PG Fort Madison | 2022 State IA | PG | Fort Madison (128)
An athletic 5-10 guard, Dear is averaging 14.9 points and 5.0 assists a game for the Bloodhounds. He thrives on his ability to break down a defense and get to the rim, where he can finish or dish off a helper, and if he can improve his jumper, watch out.
Isaiah Washington Isaiah Washington 6'5" | PF Mason City | 2022 State IA | PF | Mason City (141)
A lanky 6-5 forward, Washington has really come on strong this year, averaging 16.4 points and 7.0 rebounds for the Mohawks. He’s a long and versatile defender who can switch onto smaller players or protect the rim, and he has been a great finisher around the rim. He has solid footwork and soft touch around the bucket.
Blake Ingvall Blake Ingvall 6'3" | SF Estherville Lincoln Central | 2022 State IA | SF | Estherville Lincoln Central (150)
The Midgets have been one of the most pleasant surprises in the state this season, and the next two players on this list are a big reason why. Ingvall is a 6-3 wing who is averaging 12.8 points and 7.6 rebounds a game, leading the team in boards and providing a solid secondary scoring option. He’s at his best when he’s attacking the rim and pounding the offensive glass.
Ryan Schiltz Ryan Schiltz 5'10" | PG Estherville Lincoln Central | 2022 State IA | PG | Estherville Lincoln Central (153)
A 5-10 lead guard who has given the Midgets a strong secondary ball-handling option, Schiltz is averaging 3.0 assists to go with knockdown perimeter shooting (45.8 3P%). He’s also been a menace on the defensive end, swiping over 3 steals a night as the focal point of a strong perimeter defense.
Dylan McIlrath Dylan McIlrath 6'2" | SG Grinnell | 2022 State IA | SG | Grinnell (154)
A third Grinnell Tiger among the newcomers, McIlrath is a 6-2 off-ball guard who attacks the rim and gets to the free-throw line at a high clip. If he can improve his efficiency a bit in the second part of the year, he could see his scoring numbers skyrocket.
Chevelle Ruchti Chevelle Ruchti 6'6" | C Hoover | 2022 State IA | C | Hoover (155)
A physical 6-6 interior presence, Ruchti has been a solid force in the paint for the Huskies, averaging 7.3 points and 9.7 rebounds along with 1.5 blocks a game. He’s a smart defender who rotates well and walls up around the rim, and he’s an efficient offensive option who knows his limitations and doesn’t stray from what he’s good at.
Mitchell DeVries Mitchell DeVries 6'1" | SF Denver | 2022 State IA | SF | Denver (158)
After the Cyclones lost a number of pieces to graduation, they needed someone to step into a scoring role, and DeVries has done just that, averaging 13.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists a game. A 6-1 wing who can score from all three levels, facilitate, and rebound, he’s a solid do-it-all option who limits mistakes and takes what is given to him.
