This article talks about the most surprising players I saw this past week. I went to Perrysburg Tuesday Night as they hosted Toledo Whitmer, then to St. John’s Jesuit both Friday and Saturday as they hosted Toledo Central Catholic and Lakewood St. Edward’s, and then finally Sunday at Coach Q’s Keewpee’s Holiday Classic.

Cam Grant (2023): F, 6’7. Lakewood St. Edward’s

Cam Grant is a big, long, and athletic junior for St. Ed’s. Grant is listed at 6’7 and is just as long but his athleticism gives him the ability to play both inside and out. Grant showed the ability to guard St. John’s smaller guards all night and he even handled it against them from the outside as well. He has a wide frame and long arms that gave him the ability to alter many shots all night long. Grant did not hit a three all night on a couple of attempts, but I believe he is a stretch 4 at the next level. If he gets a consistent jumper then I believe he will make a huge impact at the next level.

Matt Watkins (2023): G, 6’3. Perrysburg

Watkins impressed Tuesday night. He had his fingerprints all over the game. He scored 8 points for Perrysburg right off the bat. The 6’3 junior brought the ball up for the jackets all night long against Whitmer full court run and jump pressure and handled it great for most of the night. He hit a three to start off the game but got most of his points from attacking the basket and having multiple tough finishes. Watkins is a player. He has a natural ability to put the ball in the basket and has great size with good athleticism to complement his game nicely.

Tony Fisher Jr (2022): F, 6’3. Toledo Whitmer

Tony Fisher Jr plays his butt off. Fisher did all the dirty work for Whitmer against Perrysburg on Tuesday night. He has an incredibly high motor, this is seen with his aggressiveness of attacking the glass on both ends of the floor. Tony is not that tall but he is an outstanding athlete. He is strong, seeks contact, and jumps out of the gym. Fisher had the most impressive play from Tuesday night. He grabbed an offensive rebound over 2 Perrysburg defenders, jumps to put the ball back in, and gets blocked, and then after landing jumped right back up and had a 2 hand vertical 3rd jump dunk.

Trey Lake (2022): G, 6’0. Toledo St. John’s Jesuit

Trey Lake impressed Saturday night against St. Ed’s. He played his butt off all night long and gave the Titans life. He can flat outshoot it as he hit a couple of big threes and is a sneaky good finisher who had some tough finishes against some big teams from this past weekend. He has a good rip-and-take-it ability. He is more athletic than I believe he gets credit for as he brings good ball pressure and has great anticipation that leads to some steals for the Titans.

[player_tooltip player_id="1181815" first="Micah" last="Thames"] (2022): G, 6’0 Toledo Central Catholic

Thames can flat-out shoot the ball. He was vital for Central Catholic as he hit multiple big-time threes against their rivals St. John’s Jesuit. He had 17 points on Friday night. He played very hard on both ends of the floor. He showed the ability to move and defend hard. He has the ability to spread out the floor and is always ready for a catch and shot opportunity and will make teams pay for it.
