West Fargo, ND - Teams across Minnesota and Class A schools in North Dakota had scrimmages yesterday as they ramp up for their official first games of the season late next week. Minnesota and Class A ND schools started to practice this past week on Monday. Games will be here soon with Moorhead traveling to Bismarck Century on Friday, December 3. Sheyenne opens up with Mandan at home on Saturday, December 4. Both teams are long and athletic with some impressive players. In this article, we will be looking at the players who stood out during the scrimmage on Saturday.

Moorhead Spuds

[player_tooltip player_id="1139197" first="Adam" last="Jenkins"] (2023) |6-7 F|

He was the best player on the court for Moorhead. Adam was a beast on the boards and I loved how he high-pointed the ball. Jenkins grabbed multiple offensive rebounds and he followed his own shot. Jenkins had a post entry which he immediately followed with a vertical cut that led to an easy basket. Adam had an impressive 2-handed wham in transition. He had another massive slam dunk after a post seal in the paint. Jenkins had another nice seal and finish on a high-low action. Jenkins is a stud, he is going to put on a show in every game this season.

Dylan Zimmerman (2024) |6-5 F|

You could see flashes of brilliance from this young star. I liked his aggressiveness when cutting and his pull-up jumper looked great.

Elliot Hoff (2022) |6-4 G|

He looked well shooting the 3-ball in transition. Hoff also scored multiple points in coast-to-coast finishes. Elliot also showed off a skilled turn-around jumper shot from mid-post.

[player_tooltip player_id="1139205" first="John" last="Jenkins"] (2022) |6-5 F|

He is a long, rangy, and athletic player. John shined when he picked off a pass and went in for a super impressive 2-handed dunk. Jenkins has the potential to be a very nice player this year for the Spuds.

Karsten Stumo (2022) |6-2 G|

I liked how he finished in transition. Karsten showed great patience with multiple fakes, pivots, and a sweet step-through finish. Stumo also showed a physical finish with a strong AND1 bucket.

Mekhi Elmore (2022) |5-10 G|

He is a very fast and athletic guard. Elmore scored multiple baskets in transition. Mekhi also showed a smooth pull-up jump shot. Elmore showed great touch on a lob entry into the post. Mekhi will be a slasher and a creator for the Spuds this season.

Sheyenne Mustangs

[player_tooltip player_id="1273975" first="Derrick" last="Lobbo"] (2022) |6-2 SG|

He is a very strong and athletic wing player. Lobbo is a hustler and a grinder. I like the enthusiasm that he plays with. Derrick was impressive when he posted up a smaller guard and he finished the bucket with a 1-haned turn-around push shot. Lobbo will offer depth, athleticism, and playmaking for the Mustangs this winter.

[player_tooltip player_id="812221" first="Dominic" last="Dosmann"] (2022) |6-8 PF|

He showed that he is an improved athlete compared to last year. His highlight of the day was when Dosmann led the fastbreak with a steal and he finished the play with a bouncy transition 2-handed slam. Dominic has some big-play ability. Dosmann is also a reliable rebounder, finisher, and rim protector. Most of all, Dom is a very very good post defender.

[player_tooltip player_id="1133065" first="James" last="Hagen"] (2022) |5-9 G|

He is a high-energy player that had the ball in his hands often. James does a nice job pushing in transition and kicking the ball ahead. He attacks the basket aggressively which led to multiple AND1 finishes. Hagen looked good at the FT-line, he will be one of the players the Mustangs will want to be shooting late in the game from the charity stripe.

[player_tooltip player_id="1133064" first="Kaleb" last="Larson"] (2022) |6-3 SG|
He is a big guard with nice length. Larson is known for being a 3-point shooter and he showed off his deep-range capabilities yesterday. He was not necessarily hot, but he will be one of the top 3-pointer shooters this year in the EDC. I was impressed with Kaleb’s ball skills and his passing. He showed off some very nice 1-handed passes off the dribble.

[player_tooltip player_id="1336009" first="Matt" last="Gooselaw"] (2022) |6-5 F| West Fargo Sheyenne

He is another very long forward for the Mustangs. He did a nice job on the glass and Matt had a very nice O-board putback. Gooselaw is another versatile player that can score in the paint and from beyond the arc. Matt looked good shooting it from deep yesterday, especially from the top of the key.

[player_tooltip player_id="1046354" first="Michael" last="Nhial"] (2022) |6-7 SF|

He was the best player for Sheyenne. Nhial hit more 3-pointers than I could keep track of. Mike was hitting 3-balls in transition, off the dribble, and while spotting up and spacing. This lefty can really shoot it! His high release and elevation allow him to get his shot off almost any time he chooses. Nhial was great on the offensive glass and he was thorough at following his own shot. Mike had one super nice transition finish where he drove baseline and made a super sweet reverse layup with a ton of english spin on it. This kid is not just athletic, he is crafty as well! Nhial showed that he can finish through contact with an AND1. His most impressive play of the day was his wildly athletic and rim-rocking dunk. The entire basket was shaking all the way up to the rafters. Talk about explosiveness! Get ready for [player_tooltip player_id="1046354" first="Michael" last="Nhial"], he is going to have an incredible year for the Mustangs.

[player_tooltip player_id="1133224" first="Zander" last="Newton"] (2022) |6-4 SF|

He was one of the most impressive players yesterday. He is longer and more athletic than I realized. Zander stood out rebounding the basketball with great timing. Newton was impressive shooting the ball. Especially in catch-and-shoot situations from beyond the 3-point arc. He looks to be a confident and reliable FT-shooter. Newton also scored around the basket with his length and athleticism. Zander is going to have a big senior season. He will be a mismatch problem with his height and versatility.
