This weekend I attended the Northeast Recruiting Report’s (NERR) National Prep Showcase at Albertus Magnus College in my own New Haven, Connecticut. While the games may have been muted in importance by the impending flock of Yale and Harvard alum attending The Game, the showcase brought together some of the nation’s best prep school talent. And as a fairly new New England scout, I couldn’t have been more excited to finally get to see some of the region’s best teams go at it.

Now for the heavy hitters... the New Englanders! This is the fourth part of a 4-part examination of the best NE talent at the tournament, to be published throughout the week for your enjoyment. There was more than enough incredible Northeast kids in attendance, so with only 4 parts, I had to look hard and long at my notes to find the kids that really stood out to me. Here’s the last bunch:

[player_tooltip player_id="996913" first="Kyle" last="Filipowski"], Wilbraham Monson Academy (MA), 6-10, 2022, Duke commit

Filipowski is a big time prospect and may have been the best player I watched all weekend. Filipowski was the highest ranked prospect of the weekend (#10 on ESPN 100), and showed exactly why he’s ranked so highly. His combination of size and skill is incredible. He stuffed the stat sheet in a big win over a very good South Kent (CT) squad, logging 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 2 blocks. He didn’t miss a shot from distance (3-3 attempts) and shot an impressive 9-12 from the field. He was able to bully defenders on the block and score truly from all 3 levels. He’s also a solid athlete who can put defenders into tricky situations under the basket. Filipowski also really shocked me with how solid of a handle he has, able to fly past and shake defenders for easy finishes under the basket. Defensively, he’s effective and is a good shot blocker. He looks like a well put together prospect with all of the physical tools and skillset to be a big time NCAA/NBA talent.

[player_tooltip player_id="1081805" first="Deven" last="Austin"], Wilbraham Monson Academy (MA), 6-5, 2022, Princeton commit

Thoughts of the players on this WMA team usually go to [player_tooltip player_id="996913" first="Kyle" last="Filipowski"] and his brother Matthew Filipowski, leaving Austin slightly forgotten about in discussion. But this Princeton commit is as solid as they come. He’s a long wing with a tendency to get downhill by all means necessary and put the ball in the basket. He’s not a lights out guy from distance, but with his combination of skillset and length, that isn’t completely necessary. He generates defensive stops with his length and can really run the floor on defense. He’ll have a fun time playing against former teammate Matt when Princeton and Harvard face off in the Ivy League next season.

Kayvaun Mulreddy, Worcester Academy (MA), 6-4, 2023

This junior wing-guard was one of Worcester’s best players in their win over Blair Academy (NJ). While he may have made some wild decisions, there was no doubt that Mulreddy was a full on hooper. He put up 19 points on 7-13 shooting and was a menace going downhill. There were a couple baskets that I couldn’t believe fell for Mulreddy, but when you’re hot, you’re hot. He skipped through the Blair defense with ease and poise, puzzling the Blair big men and leaving other defenders without a chance. Mulreddy is young, and his game shows it, but with some more refining on the offensive end Mulreddy could be a big time D1 prospect that makes an immediate difference to a Power 5 team.

Dan Becil, Worcester Academy (MA), 6-4, 2022

Becil may have had the biggest stock boosting performance of the weekend. This 6-4 sharpshooter absolutely exploded in the game against Blair Academy, racking up 34 points on 7-11 three point shooting and completely taking over in the last few minutes. It felt like Becil couldn’t miss going into the last 5 minutes, and he was absolutely torching the Blair Academy defense. He also was a pretty solid finisher, despite not being able to get much going in the first half on the finishing end. But his complete takeover, unlimited range, and incredible ability to shoot while contested raise this high-academic prospect’s stock from a D3 guy to someone who could slot at a high academic D1. Every team could use a shooter like Becil, and teams who know that can nab him now before his value skyrockets this winter.
