The AAU basketball season is officially behind us. The Prep Hoops Grit Region Finals, along with the other regional finals held around the country, capped off the month while crowing some champions along the way. Before closing the book on the summer basketball scene we will take a look at the top performers from the weekend starting with the best point guards in Indiana’s Class of 2023.

[player_tooltip player_id="1162765" first="Kamea" last="Chandler"] (Guerin Catholic H.S. 2023/Grand Park Premier 2023 Black)

Chandler is a quick 5’10″ point guard that broke the defense down off of the dribble and scored it both via pull-ups and finishes around the basket. Very quick with the ball in his hands with a variety of effective dribble moves. He loves to push it in transition and showed the ability to make good decisions at full speed in the open floor. Chandler should be a good player for Guerin Catholic as a junior after transferring over from Fishers.

[player_tooltip player_id="1042495" first="Dylan" last="Doss"] (Heritage Christian H.S. 2023/INB 2023 Elite)

It was a breakout weekend for Doss who recently transferred from Cathedral to Heritage Christian where he will team up in the backcourt with his AAU running mate [player_tooltip player_id="868229" first="Myles" last="Colvin"]. The 5’10" point guard shot the lights out all weekend long while help lead INB 2023 Elite to the 16u championship. Doss can make tough threes both off of the catch and by creating his own shot off of the dribble. He made a couple of really tough ones playing off of the ballscreen. Doss is poised for a big junior season at his new home.

[player_tooltip player_id="868232" first="Marcus" last="Northern"] (South Bend Washington H.S. 2023/Indiana Game 2023 Premier)

I’ve been impressed with this South Bend Washington guard all summer long. Northern is a 5’11" point guard with excellent playmaking skills off of the dribble. He is continuing to develop as an outsider shooter, but he is great at penetrating the defense and finishing inside. Very good athlete with some explosiveness both laterally and vertically. Northern has a lot of on-ball defensive tools as well. Very good all-around player.

[player_tooltip player_id="935739" first="Darrius" last="Roach"] (Crown Point H.S. 2023/Indiana Game 2023 Premier)

Roach was great over the weekend for Indiana Game 2023 Premier as they would make it the 16u Grit Region Finals semifinals before losing a close one to the eventual champions INB 2023 Elite. At 6’1" with a strong frame, Roach plays through contact really well with the ball and is a high level finisher around the rim. He really gets after it on the defensive end too. The backcourt at Crown Point has several talented guards, but expect Roach to carve out a significant role this winter.

Darren Weaver (Merrillville H.S. 2023/Indiana Game 2023 Blue)

The 5’9" lead guard got hot from beyond the arc early on in his first game of the weekend when I was watching Friday night. Weaver would go on to show that he can score it from all three levels, but his perimeter shooting was definitely his moneymaker this weekend.
