Here is a look at some of the top standouts from the first day of action on Friday.
Nate Straughter Nate Straughter 6'3" | SG Chaminade | 2022 State MO 6’3 Chaminade: The 2022 shooting guard looked dominant on the offensive end as he had things working from all three levels. He was shooting the 3-pointer at a high clips and he was mixing it a variety of athletic drives to the basket along with a few entertaining dunks.
Malcolm Davis Malcolm Davis 6'1" | SG Helias | 2022 State MO 6’1 Helias: The 2022 shooting guard started the game slow, but then he caught fire and couldn’t be stopped as he scored 28 points and hit the game wining 3-pointer in overtime. He was hitting open 3s, contested 3s and tough drives to the basket. He also delivered some nice passes throughout the game.
Courtland Simmons 5’11 Fulton: The bullish 2023 point guard scored 24 points and had a strong defensive presence in the game I watched. He simply manhandles opposing guards with his strength on his way to the bucket. And he can hit the jumper off the dribble. He is also a stout defender who can shoot the passing lanes for steals.
Kyle Bruce Kyle Bruce 5'7" | PG Blue Springs | 2022 State MO 5’8 Blue Springs: The 2022 point guard was a little general in leading his team back from a 19-point deficit to a victory. He just took over stretches of the game at both ends. He broke down the defense and got into the for buckets and dimes to open teammates. He also dialed up the defense his on ball pressure.
Nathan Brandt 6’3 Fatima: The 2023 guard had a productive first game with 21 points. I was very impressed with how he attacked the basket on athletic drives and finished. He also reminded us that he can shoot it as he knocked down a pair of long 3-pointers.
Jared Lee 6’0 Staley: The 2023 point guard was a smooth operator with the ball in his hands. He has slick handles as he dropped off defenders with s variety of hesis and crossovers to get to his spots. His jumper was also butter. I also like the way he shared the ball as he he had several assists in the game I watched.
Grant Givens Grant Givens 6'6" | SF Glendale | 2022 State MO 6’6 Glendale: The 2022 Stretch 4 had a nice first game in scoring 17 points and corralling a bunch of rebounds. He displayed his extended 3-point range and coupled it with his ability to go inside and score in the post. He is long and very mobile.
