SCB Summer League Standouts Week 1 – Part 2

<p><em>Part 2 of my standouts from the first week of the summer league. </em></p> <p>Joe Marfisi and Bam Mchpail - 2022 Guards - Lincoln East</p> <p>I saw Marfisi flip a switch and it was over for Norfolk. The 5’10 guard from East made the decision to attack the hoop relentlessly and it was over for the other team. He finished around and through whatever defender was put in front of him, and when they started taking away his layups he made smart reads for dump downs and kick-outs. He’s another smart and gritty point guard that backed down from no one. Mcphail is the other 5’10 guard that time and again proves that he’s one of the best defenders in the state. He wasn’t afraid to get up into players and take the ball right out of their hands. He’s got a great lefty jumper and is incredibly unselfish in East’s system. But don’t be fooled, he can get a bucket when he needs to. These are two guards that will help soften the blow of losing [player_tooltip player_id="890474" first="Carter" last="Glenn"] to graduation for Lincoln East. </p> <p>[player_tooltip player_id="1131117" first="Marcus" last="Glock"] - 2024 Guard - Wahoo</p> <p>I’d heard nothing but great things about Glock going into the day and he did not disappoint. His understanding of the game is well beyond his years and some of the reads he made were downright jaw-dropping. He has the ability to be a special passer if he would like but his true skill is his ability to draw fouls. I can see Glock living at the line the next couple of years, and the fact that he’s left-handed already makes him tricky to guard. He’ll be a solid shooter and will be highlighted for a fun Wahoo team next year. </p> <p>[player_tooltip player_id="981714" first="Zander" last="Beard"] - 2022 Guard - Lincoln Northeast</p> <p>I’d already had Beard tabbed as a breakout star for next year but his performance just confirmed it for me. He had that Senior poise that kept his team steady regardless of the situation and made some great reads for advanced buckets. He’s a legitimate three-level scorer that hit stepbacks and when he got to the hoop, forget about it. He was seemingly finishing everything. This Northeast squad has got some really solid players and Beard will be the heart and soul of that squad. </p> <p>De’Andre Nelson - 2023 Forward - Wahoo</p> <p>I had never heard of Nelson before this, but his name definitely stuck with me by the end of the afternoon. He’s about 6’5/6’6 with a frame that will put on more weight as he puts more work in. What immediately struck me was the fluidity of his jumper, it’s one of the more beautiful ones that I saw that day. He’s unconscious with his shot and it did not matter if the defender closed all the way out to his body, he was pulling it and for the most part that day, he was knocking it down. He’ll have to continue to sharpen up his defense but there’s something to be said about a nice kid that’s very coachable. He was also a great teammate all day and should be a key piece for this Wahoo squad as well. </p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
