The AAU season is in full swing in VA a little earlier than usual this year, as there were multiple tournaments throughout the state. I decided to head to Harrisonburg to the Big Shots VA Horizon Tip-Off, where I broadcasted and live streamed court one on the CBG Live Network.

It was a great event to see some under the radar talent, and we’ll take a look at the many standouts, starting with the available 2021 prospects that stood out throughout the day.

You can watch all of the games from court one of the event on the CBG Live Network here.

[player_tooltip player_id="957913" first="Tyler" last="Martin"] | 6’3” WF | VA Havoc Roa/William Byrd

Martin was a standout at the CBG Unsigned Senior Showcase and after his showing at the Big Shots Horizon Tip-Off I can’t help but think that there’s a school somewhere that could use him in some way. He’s the ultimate culture and glue guy, as he is a hard working kid that will take on any role and can and will do a lot of things to help a team win games. He showed he can make plays for others with the ball in his hands, he rebounds and gets deflections, he can shoot it out to the three-point line and he’s a better athlete than given credit for.

Jadon Walker | 5’11” WG | VA Blaze/New Covenant

Walker is one of the top scorers that is still available in the Virginia area, and the reason not too many people know about him is simply because he played at a very small school in the Lynchburg area that not many get a chance to see. He’s a microwave type of guard that gets hot quickly and can fill it up in bunches when he does so, and he can do it in a number of ways as well. He has tough shot making ability from deep, he has good footwork and plays with good pace off the bounce allowing him to create space and he can get to the line with ease which he does regularly.

Alfred Worrell | 6’4” WG | Team Vito/Archbishop Carroll (DC)

Worrell says that he’s going to do a post grad year somewhere, and if he does I can’t see him not getting division one attention with his strength and ability to score the ball so effectively. In their loss to Blaze, Worrell went for 39 points, showing that he can shoot it from deep consistently and he can get in the lane and finish through traffic using his good size. He isn’t the most athletic guy but he is highly skilled and is a guy that simply knows how to get a bucket and can do so whenever his team needs him to.

[player_tooltip player_id="838042" first="Luc" last="Therrien"] | 6’9” PF | Big Shots Tri-Cities/Bull City Prep (NC)

Therien was a force in the paint throughout the weekend on the way to Big Shots TC winning the 17U title, and unfortunately he got hurt and wasn’t able to play in the title game but that didn’t diminish him impact. The 6’9” big man isn’t unbelievably skilled or anything, but he has a good motor and is extremely mobile as he can run the floor and gets off his feet quickly to finish above the rim and protect the rim as well. He can step out to the high post where he can shoot it and is a good passer, he plays with great energy and he still has a lot of room to get better moving forward.

[player_tooltip player_id="798720" first="Logan" last="Barbour"] | 6’1” PG | Able United Ball Hawks/William Monroe

Barbour has quietly been one of the top guards in the Charlottesville area, and the dual sport star is a very skilled and cerebral lead guard that always makes his team better. He sees the game well and makes good decisions, and he’s an above average athlete with good quickness that changes speeds and is able to get where he needs to on the floor. He can score from multiple levels when he needs to, he’s a good defender and he brings a good toughness to his team as well.

Landon Swingler | 6’2” WG | VABA Bruins/Regents Charlottesville

Swingler is another guy in the Charlottesville area that just isn’t known because he doesn’t play for a big school, but he’s an all-around wing that some team at the next level could use. He’s long and athletic which makes him an impact on the defensive end, and he’s a threat on the offensive end both as a slasher and as a spot up shooter as well. He can play in multiple roles and is someone who can be both a glue guy and a go-to guy when he needs to.

Andrew Shifflett | 6’0” PG | VABA Bruins/Western Albemarle

Shifflett is another under the radar guy who helped Western Albemarle become one of the top programs in the area over the past few years, and he’s the ultimate floor general and culture guy to bring into your system. He’s a very smart lead guard who handles pressures and can get you into sets and run them to perfection, and he’s also one of the hardest working kids that will help set the tone on both ends of the floor. He’s a knock down shooter from deep, he’s crafty around the rim and he brings it on both ends of the floor.

Sihle Mthethwa | 6’0” CG | VABA Bruins/Orange County

Mthethwa is another Charlottesville guy from a small area but he’s a bucket getter as he showed by scoring 50 points in a game this year at Orange County. He’s a strong guard that can play either guard position and plays physically on both ends of the floor, and he’s a very hard worker both on the court and in the classroom. He can make shots from deep consistently, and he’s tough to stop when he gets downhill and toward the basket.
