Gilbert’s Notebook: Week 3 Notes

<p>Week 3 saw a classic game Division 4 game. It’s also that time of year where players start reaching the 1,000 point mark. Let’s get right to it. </p> <p>[player_tooltip player_id="814631" first="Jack" last="Stefanski"] <b>6-6 2021 Frankfort </b>Came out on the losing end of a classic game with McBain NMC (see below). However he did all he could to bring the Panthers back in that one. Scored 26 points and played an excellent all around floor game. Reached 1,000 career points in this contest. Looks bigger and more physical than this summer. Lacking a little bit of explosiveness coming off a knee injury. Despite increased size still penetrates well. Finishes with both hands around the basket. Fiery competitor who almost willed his team to the victory. Bounced back in a big way with a victory the next evening against a good Benzie Central squad. </p> <p><b>Trevin Winkle 6-4 2022 McBain Northern Michigan Christian </b>First repeat appearance in the notebook but has earned it. Kept the Comets undefeated against a very competitive slate. Outstanding performance against Frankfort. Scored 23 points in the victory but also displayed plenty of winning intangibles that led to the victory. Simply put did it all. Scored on the inside, hit a big three at the halftime buzzer, and ran the point. Making a statement and people are starting to take notice. I was getting texts from AAU coaches who were streaming during the game. Has a chance to make an even bigger statement with two late season contest against crosstown rival McBain, the number one ranked team in Division 3. </p> <p>[player_tooltip player_id="1125796" first="Gavin" last="Miller"] <b>6-3 2021 Leland </b>Big week for the senior guard. Bounced back from a tough loss to Benzie Central with an absolutely huge game on Saturday game against a decent Buckley squad. Did most of his damage from beyond the arc. Final three of the game gave him 41, that’s not a typo, 41 points. Last bucket also gave him a even 1,000 points in his career. The Division 4 bracket appears to be pretty wide open for the first time in a while up north.  A deep tournament run could put this productive player on some recruiting boards. </p> <p><b>Tyler Stevenson 6-4 2023 Frankfort </b>Unlike the first two players on this list, this young post struggled in the Division 4 clash. Fouled out with less than ten points but still flashed a lot of potential. Big time athlete who elevated for multiple blocked shots. Also got out very quickly in transition. Plays well above the rim but missed a dunk that would have been huge in the outcome of the contest. Appears to be still getting acclimated with his new team as he is a transfer. Definitely more athlete than basketball player at this point but is still very young. Played up an age group with Parallel 45 Green this summer. If he continues to develop his all around game he could be a name to know in the next few years. </p> <p><b>Grayson Elmquist 6-0 2023 Lake City </b>A real deep sleeper here. Began the season playing JV but after the call up has really began to make his mark. Scored 16 points a piece in two victories last week. Looks talker than his listed height due to slender build. His game right now is built off a tight handle and a lot of top end speed. If he can develop an outside shot could a real problem in the next two years. </p>
