Let’s take a glance around Kansas at some of the stand out games and performances starting with our most impressive performance on the night from the Campus Colts.
Campus Colts run away from Newton
With the array of talent on the Colts roster, they were able to put on quite an offensive clinic in their big win over Newton yesterday. Campus played with an extreme amount of energy and enthusiasm which was awesome to see, and you can see the team comradery growing as we enter the home stretch.
2023 6’2 Guard Zion Young Zion Young 6'2" | CG Life Prep | 2023 State KS was a monster throughout the night, scoring a game high 25 points in the win and knocked down 3 three balls. He was great at running the wings and getting his body ready to shoot in transition. The lefty is extremely talented and has a great build and athleticism, and is poised to make a huge mark this season and in future ones. He also has a nice mid range float game he showcased last night. It was his best game as a Campus Colt so far
The duo of 2021 Guards Stevie Strong Jr Stevie Strong Jr 6'1" | PG Campus | 2021 State KS and Sterling Chapman Sterling Chapman 6'4" | CG Campus | 2021 State KS (pictured above) were electric and dynamic. Highlight of the night across the state was a beautiful between the legs alley-oop of the glass that Strong threw to Chapman on a fast break. Chapman was dominate with the ball in his hands and was great on the glass imposing his physicality. Strong was great from the point guard spot, dictating tempo, finding shooters, and getting out in to transition.
2021 6’ Guard Jayden Hall was also tremendous in the transition game both finishing and kicking to open teammates all night. He is a great guard that adds more of the playmaking ability for a really strong Campus team.
Salina South and Hutch do battle
In a close battle, South was able to squeak ahead 64-60 over Hutch. There were standout performances in this one and big time clutch moments. This game featured ties and lead changes galore and came down to the final minutes of the ball game.
Top Performers
Devon Junghans Devon Junghans 5'9" | PG Salina South | 2021 State KS , 5’11 Point Guard, 2021, Salina South: Led the way for South with 20 points, helped get good shots down the stretch and controlled the defensive end late. He continued to show why his poise, leadership, and infectious energy from the point guard spot help lead to team success wherever he plays. Showed his ability last night to play off the dribble with both hands and knock down big time shots. Dropped 15 of his 20 in the second half and went 6 of 7 from the line and hit 4 threes on 8 attempts.
Myles Thompson Myles Thompson 6'7" | SF Hutchinson | 2021 State KS , 6’7 Forward, 2021, Hutchinson: The big forward was a force all night and put up a monster game in the close loss, scoring 33 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. A unique and versatile skill set make Thompson a tough guard every night and it was more of the same against South. He has a great mix of physicality and soft touch with the ball, and him being left handed just adds another wrinkle for teams to deal with.
Notables
Arlander Johnson, 6’3 Guard, 2021, Salina South: Scored 11 points to help South in the win. Great athleticism and scoring ability when playing in structure and under control. He has been sneaky good for the Cougars this year. When in attack mode off the bounce, he gives them another offensive weapon.
Jake Huhs: We got a solid point guard matchup with Huhs and Junghans. Huhs is a terrific shooter and plays gritty and hard nosed. He had 12 points on the night in the big tie matchup with South. He moves along the perimeter well to get into windows for passers and is always in position to shoot or play off the catch.
