In one of the best days of basketball I can remember in a long time, the 9th Annual Coaches for a Cure presented by Team Loaded had everything you could ask for in a high level basketball event. The four games were all very competitive, with the first one going into overtime, the second one featuring a furious come from behind victory and the last two being decided at the buzzer.

There was tons of talent in the gym with nationally ranked teams and players that all showed out, and it was all for a good cause as it raised money for cancer research at VCU’s Massey Cancer Center.

With so much talent in the gym we had to break up the standouts and did so by region. Below you will find the scores to the games and part two of the many standouts, and if you want to watch some high level and competitive basketball you can check out the archives on The CBG Live Network.

Game 1: 703 Rockets (VA) 77 CBG East (VA) 70 (OT)

Game 2: Liberty Heights (NC) 62 National Christian (MD) 54

Game 3: IMG Academy Post Grad (FL) 86 Bull City Prep (NC) 84

Game 4: Blue Magic (VA) 63 522 Warriors (VA) 60

[player_tooltip player_id="687573" first="Kenard" last="Richardson"] | 6’3” CG | Blue Magic 2021

Richardson took over as the go-to guy for Blue Magic down the stretch, and many times when the team needed a play in the back-and-forth fourth quarter they had they would give him the ball at the top of the key and just let him make a play. He’s not a guy that will wow you with his quickness or has a super flashy handle, but he has good shift and counter dribbles to get in the lane, he’s physical and can finish through traffic or find his way to the line and he can make shots from all three levels making him very dangerous and tough to guard. He finished with a team high 17 points, scoring 10 of them in the second half and finished 4-for-6 from the floor and 8-for-13 from the line.

[player_tooltip player_id="798719" first="Dana" last="Woodley"] | 6’4” WG | Blue Magic 2021

“Woo” didn’t put up super gaudy scoring numbers or anything as he didn’t take that many shots, but he hit some timely jumpers from deep and really brought it defensively as he used his length and athleticism to make big time plays on the defensive end. After missing a tough shot in the middle of the very competitive fourth quarter, Woodley ran all the way across the court to intercept a pass that would have led to a Warriors layup, and instead turned into a Blue Magic bucket at the other end. He’s improved in his leadership and maturity and it showed as he played hard throughout the game whether he was scoring or not.

[player_tooltip player_id="815590" first="Kenyon" last="Giles"] | 5’10” PG | Blue Magic 2022

The microwave scorer out of Chesapeake is one of the most dynamic scoring guards in the state, and he’s also one of the most confident and fearless scorers as well as he showed by hitting some very clutch shots, including the game winner from about 30 feet which you can see below. Giles is a guy who can pull-up from anywhere on the court and his deep range looks so easy when he lets it go, and he’s a guy who wants the ball in his hands with the game on the line. It wasn’t the only shot he hit from parking lot range, and while we had multiple games that were fantastic finishes this one seemed to be the most exciting of them all. He finished with 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor and 3-for-4 from deep.

[playlist type="video" ids="1129075"]

[player_tooltip player_id="962789" first="Davin" last="Cosby"] | 6’4” WG | Blue Magic 2022
[caption id="attachment_1122102" align="alignnone" width="200"] Photo: Lancaptures[/caption]
Speaking of big time shot makers, Cosby is one of the top shooters in the Richmond area and when shooters make shots they make a big impact for their team. The 6’4” wing came out firing as he hit the first three to open the game, and he hit timely ones throughout the game while also being a reliable secondary ball handler and playing good team defense as well. He finished with 12 points on the game, hitting 4 shots from deep on 7 attempts.

[player_tooltip player_id="1091497" first="Amarion" last="Wilson"] | 6’7” C | 522 Warriors 2021

Wilson didn’t have big numbers from a scoring perspective, but the athletic and powerful big man was key to the Warriors getting back in the game both when they made a run in the second quarter and when they closed the gap in the fourth quarter to lead to the wild finish we had. He did so on the defensive end as he used his length and athleticism to protect the rim and man the paint, and show why he’s one of the top defensive big men in the 757, if not the entire state. He’s an explosive leaper and has a quick second jump, he has good timing as a shot blocker and he plays with a good motor, finishing with 4 blocks and 7 rebounds on the game.

Kenny Page | 5’10” PG | 522 Warriors 2022

Page is part of a two point guard system they run, and the kid was a huge spark plug in the second half for them as he lived in the paint and showed acrobatic finishing ability through traffic among guys much bigger than him. The 5’10” point guard wreaked havoc as he showed a quick first step and good burst to blow by guys, good hang time and body control in the paint and was fearless attacking the rim and finishing among the trees. He finished with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field, scoring 8 of them in the second half.

[player_tooltip player_id="815594" first="DJ" last="Campbell"] | 6’2” PG | 522 Warriors 2022

Campbell was the most consistent guy for the Warriors, and it makes sense as he has a calming presence to him and the knack to make a play when his team needs it whether it’s creating a play for someone else or getting a bucket when his team needs him to. He’s a smooth operator who gets to his spots with ease, he has a great middle game that allows him to make contested shots when he gets downhill and he has great vision and is an underrated athlete who can play above the rim as well. He finished with a great all-around line of 17 points. 7 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and only 2 turnovers.

Jadon Pace | 6’5” WF | 522 Warriors 2023

Pace is an intriguing prospect who continues to impress me more and more every time I see him, and as he continues to improve he’ll have a chance to become one of the top prospects on the Peninsula by the time he’s down. He has great size and length for his position, he’s athletic and plays hard on both ends and he has a budding skill set that includes the ability to make shots and handle in transition. He was an energy guy and once he started getting it going it was big for the Warriors and helped them get back into it. He finished with 11 points on 50% shooting from the field and pitched in 4 assists from the wing as well.
