Last night Sioux Falls Christian knocked off Dell Rapids in a Class A/Dak XII battle of top five teams. Who were the top prospects and why? PHD runs you through the list.

One. [player_tooltip player_id="975512" first="Xavier" last="Van Beek"] (6’0 Sr Guard) of SF Christian (Dordt Commit). The player that likely grabbed my attention the most last night was [player_tooltip player_id="975512" first="Xavier" last="Van Beek"]. He didn’t have his best shooting game (5 of 13 from the field) but I really liked how he used his quickness and size advantage versus the Dell Rapids shorter guards. On the defensive end Van Beek and his teammates directed his teammates to the help very well leading to a lot of contested misses near the rim. Sure the Dell Rapids players were quicker at times and they were blitzing to the rim quick in the possession, but Van Beek was able to force his players to tougher angles that included the help. Back the other way, Van Beek was able to get a dribble or two into the paint to create shots for others (had four assists) or get to his seven scoring possessions for 14 points.

Two. [player_tooltip player_id="975510" first="Tyler" last="Prins"] (6’3 Sr Wing) of SF Christian (Dordt Commit). Tyler started very slow (missed eight of his first nine attempts) but stayed involved with his defense and rebounding (grabbed eight). Prins ultimately became the player that changed the game. Part of that is his physical ability to produce points - scored a team high 19 points - and the other part was taking advantage of who was defending him. Dell Rapids is a smaller team than SFC so Prins took advantage of that in the second half knocking out three threes and making seven of nine attempts in a big stretch. Really liked how he rebounded out of his area and made jumpers over contesting hands.

Three. [player_tooltip player_id="975534" first="Connor" last="Rentz"] (5’11 Sr Shooting Guard) of Dell Rapids. This conversation can be quick and to the point. If you don’t get a hand in the face of [player_tooltip player_id="975534" first="Connor" last="Rentz"] it’s more than likely he is making you pay with three points. [player_tooltip player_id="732203" first="Colin" last="Rentz"] does such a magnificent job of pushing the ball in transition and Connor runs to the wing/corner perfectly off that push. Rentz has a lighting quick release and gets his feet set so quick so he can attempt a shot on balance before the likely taller player comes to contest his shot. Connor scored a game high 20 points making five threes and 7 of 11 attempts. Rentz is aware that he has to get shots off quicker as he is under six feet and with that knowledge he’s learned how to quickly get set and fire off a pretty released three. Anybody in college play with pace and need a shooter? Keep an eye on Rentz if so.

Four. Jaden Witte (6’3 JR Small Forward) of SF Christian. At a strong 190, Witte has decent size and the right kind of shooting touch to keep an eye on for the future. In his limited time and touches Witte scored 13 points with five boards making 5 of 7 shots including two threes. Like Prins, Dell Rapids couldn’t contest Witte on the perimeter. It was either a player that couldn’t move well enough around the arc defending him or a shorter player that even when recovering couldn’t affect the balance or comfort of the Witte touch.

Five. [player_tooltip player_id="975501" first="Carter" last="Nelson"] (6’8 SR PF/C) of Dell Rapids. [player_tooltip player_id="975501" first="Carter" last="Nelson"] did the most with the low post touches he received. When Dell Rapids put the ball in his hands on the block he scored on 5 of 7 possessions. Nelson utilized a high quality right shoulder turn quickly moving into a balance position to touch in shots. Nelson moves fairly well for his size and we’ve seen a solid touch. There is potential there. He grabbed seven boards so the effort was okay but could of been better. Missed all his free throws but then again the team missed 14 of 25 so there’s a lot of guys to point to for that mistake. Overall, the potential is there to be pretty good after more work with his coaches this season and colleges in the coming years.

Five More

[player_tooltip player_id="968155" first="Brooks" last="Nelson"] (6’2 Jr SF) of SF Christian. Need to see Brooks a bit more but he was one of the game MVPs. Strong first impression for me hitting on 7 of 8 shots and scoring 17 points while also grabbing five boards.

[player_tooltip player_id="732203" first="Colin" last="Rentz"] (6’0 SR PG) of Dell Rapids. Rentz pushes in transition as well as anybody. Others have the same quicks, the same skills, but few have the same ability to make the right read and make the right pass like he does. Scored 13 on 5 of 13 shots with six boards and five assists.

[player_tooltip player_id="963777" first="Tate" last="Snyder"] (5’11 Soph PG) of SF Christian. I was impressed with the poise that this young man played with on and off the ball. Scored 11 points with five boards plus hit a couple threes.

[player_tooltip player_id="812203" first="Nathan" last="Koole"] (6’9 Jr C) of SF Christian. The Chargers needed two things from Koole: to contest shots around the rim and he did a great job of that forcing a lot of bad misses from Dell Rapids guards, and grab boards which Koole did collecting ten.

[player_tooltip player_id="963773" first="Brayden" last="Pankonen"] (5’9 Soph PG) of Dell Rapids. There is a lot of spunk to this young guard who can change directions in an instant to get to his shot. Scored 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting. There were some rushed attempts but the potential was clear.
