One of the coolest things about the new Prep Hoops rankings is that it automatically ranks players by position, allowing you to see the rankings among PGs, CGs, SGs, SFs, PFs and Cs. However, new school guys like me who believe in relatively positionless basketball, as the game trends that way, believes that you can simplify the game to just three positions in guards, wings and bigs.

So, I took the time to breakdown the rankings into the three positions, and have ranked the top 25 in each position. Here’s a look at some of the top point and combo guards, looking at numbers 25-16 in the new rankings.

25) Ayrion Journiette | 6’0” | Northside (#86 Overall)

Journiette could be one of the breakout players in the Roanoke area now that he’s one of Northside’s most experienced players and one of the only guys left who played on the state championship team two years ago. He’s an athletic and fearless guard who can get to the rim and finish through traffic, he’s improved as a shotmaker from deep and he brings it on the defensive end where he can guard the ball and jump passing lanes.

24) Trey Gilenwater | 6’1” | Eastern Mennonite (#82 Overall)

Gillenwater could prove that we ranked him too low, as he’s a highly skilled combo guard that can both fill it up and make others on his team better as well. He’s a high IQ guy who sees the floor well, he’s able to create space and make shots from multiple levels and he continually makes good decisions on both ends of the floor.

23) [player_tooltip player_id="1107846" first="Reggie" last="Robertson"] | 5’8” | John Marshall (#81 Overall)

While John Marshall has some bigger guys and bigger names on their team, Robertson is a key piece that brings toughness and playmaking ability, and he always brings it against top teams. He’s a shot making guard that can play on and off the ball, he guards the ball the length of the floor and doesn’t back down and he’s a good athlete with good body control around the basket.

22) [player_tooltip player_id="815610" first="Quanye" last="Veney"] | 6’0” | Highland Springs (#78 Overall)

A two sport athlete that also stars on one of the top football teams in the state, Veney is a natural athlete who is lightning quick and very tough to contain off the dribble. He has great end-to-end speed and thrives in the open floor, he’s a natural playmaker and he is one of the top perimeter defenders in the state as well.

21) [player_tooltip player_id="962794" first="Elijah" last="White"] | 5’10” | Kempsville (#77 Overall)

White is one of the top guards in the 757 over the past few years, and while he isn’t a big time athlete or has a lot of size he’s highly skilled and able to make plays off the bounce. He’s a smooth guard with good wiggle off the bounce, he can create space and make shots from multiple levels and he has a great feel for the game and good vision as a playmaker as well.

20) [player_tooltip player_id="964451" first="Devin" last="Walker"] | 6’0” | Blue Ridge (#76 Overall)

Walker is a guy who has waited his turn at Blue Ridge as he’s behind two division one commits, but he’s a guy who can play himself as well. A high IQ guard with good quickness and shiftiness off the bounce, he’s a playmaker who can get in the lane and can also stick it from deep when he’s off the ball.

19) [player_tooltip player_id="1107844" first="Ryan" last="Blakey"] | 5’9” | Fairfax Christian (#73 Overall)

Blakey is a big addition to an already talented Fairfax Christian team, and his ability to make plays on both ends of the floor will help make other guys on the team better as well. He’s lightning quick off the bounce with good end to end speed and a quick first step, he’s crafty around the basket and can score from multiple levels and he moves his feet well and has quick hands on the defensive end as well.

18) [player_tooltip player_id="962795" first="George" last="Cutler"] | 6’0” | Cape Henry (#61 Overall)

Cutler is one of those guys I’ll admit may be higher when it’s all said and done, as he’s improved a lot over the past few years and he has a lot in his bag that makes him tough to guard. He’s quick off the bounce and is shifty as he has a great handle and can change directions very well, he can get in the lane and make plays for others and he has a terrific middle game and the ability to finish among the trees when he gets in the lane.

17) [player_tooltip player_id="1107835" first="Cam" last="Gregory"] | 6’2” | Steward School (#57 Overall)

Gregory transfers to Steward School from a good program in Eleanor Roosevelt in MD and he is a guy who has stepped in and made an immediate impact for the Spartans already. A long 6’2” combo guard that can play on and off the basketball, he has tons of tools that are intriguing moving forward including his athleticism, ability to make shots from multiple levels and the fact that he’s a two way guard that can both score it and make others better.

16) [player_tooltip player_id="1107834" first="Marquis" last="Dunklin"] | 6’0” | Bishop Ireton (#56 Overall)

One of the more underrated guards in the DMV, Dunklin has a ton of qualities to like, especially out of a lead guard. He’s a natural born leader that competes and brings it on both ends of the floor, he’s an underrated athlete that’s quick off the bounce and explosive around the rim and he seems to always make the right decisions at the right time, making him very likable to teammates and coaches.
