Multnomah has been busy on the recruiting trail so far this season and a big focus was to get players right in the Portland Metro area. One signee for the backcourt was Alex Newkirk Alex Newkirk 6'1" | CG Oregon City | 2021 State OR . The steady 6-foot-1 combo guard from Oregon City looked at a few options before making the decision to be a Lion, after determining it was the best fit for him both on and off the court.
“I really fell in love with the campus on my visits and enjoyed the coaches and players I got to meet,” Newkirk said. “There’s a great culture at Multnomah that I couldn’t find in any of the other schools I visited. I also really liked that it is a Christian school and that means everyone around me believes the same things I do including my coaches and teammates, which are the people I will be around the most.”
Of course, the fit on the basketball floor was just right as well. “They play an uptempo style and shoot a lot of threes which is a fun style of play,” Newkirk said. “I feel like the shooting the three-point shot is one of my strengths.”
Newkirk was also looking at George Fox (where both of his parents attended and played) and Pacific Lutheran before making the final decision. He’s excited about the opportunity ahead but realizes he still has work to do to get ready and hopefully a senior season to play.
“I need to get a lot stronger and really need to work on mbeing quicker off the dribble as well as getting my shot off faster,” Newkirk said. “I’m hopeful we get the chance to play. It would be great to get to play with my high school teammates for our senior season.”
Newkirk averaged 5.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists this past season at Oregon City. He joins Kell Estep Kell Estep 6'4" | CG Sunset | 2021 State OR and Brady Grier Brady Grier 6'5" | SF Westview | 2021 State OR in the Lions signing class from the Portland metro area.
