The Great Western Winter Classic took place at Nets on Fire in St George, UT. The event ran from December 19th through December 22nd. It featured over 70 teams, including numerous local programs. Several players took advantage of this event to improve their rankings, gain exposure, and generate scholarship opportunities. In this article, we take a look at the 5 local prospects that boost their stock the most during the event.

Alex Tews 6’10 C Cooper Institute 2021 - Tews is a traditional back to the basket post, while some schools are trending away from this type of 5 man, there is always room for talented bigs. Tews is a big, powerful kid with good footwork and multiple post moves. He proved to be a fierce competitor that plays with aggression and intensity, he was able to score around the rim and showed decent R&J ability.

[player_tooltip player_id="970270" first="Marqui" last="Worthy"] 6’4 SG Veritas 2022 (featured image) - This dude was an absolute monster. Plays the game with a bully mentality, simply forcing defenders to make business decisions. Worthy was the perfect example of a player playing to his strength as he committed himself to playing downhill, and getting paint touches. If Worthy continues to play like this, it’s clear his stock will continue to rise.

[player_tooltip player_id="748773" first="Ben" last="Shtolzberg"] 6’3 SG Notre Dame 2022 - What really impressed me is that he showed that he’s more than just a shooter. To be clear, he’s always had game, it’s just that his shooting sometimes overshadows it. That was not the case this weekend. Sholtzberg shot the ball ok, but it was his ability to make extra effort plays, handle against tough defense, and set up teammates for easy baskets that really made him standout.

[player_tooltip player_id="680245" first="Trevan" last="Martin"] 6’4 SF Gamepoint 2021 - There are a few guys that you can fit into this category for GP. I like Martin because his size allows him to play multiple positions. Any program that gets him is getting a lockdown defender and a big-time R&J athlete. Honestly, these are two terrific traits to have in stockrisers.

Solomon Jones 6’8 PF Veritas 2021 - Every time I watch Jones play, I see a long rangy wing capable of defending multiple positions. He’s currently an undersized 4 that is most effective with his back to the basket, however, you can see the glimpses of his ball skills. Jones is effective from the right and left elbows and can get to the rim with two dribbles or less from that position.

Follow Prep Hoops
