One of the coolest things about the new Prep Hoops Rankings is that they automatically rank the players by positions as well. Within the rankings you can see the rankings for point guards, combo guards, shooting guards, small forwards, power forwards and centers. However, I have a different way of thinking of the game now, and believe the positions in basketball are now just guards, wings and bigs.

So we’ll be breaking down the top 25 of each in those positions. Here’s a look at the bigs ranked between 25 and 16 in the updated rankings for the class of 2021.

25) [player_tooltip player_id="798729" first="Robert" last="Grubbs"] | 6’7” | James River (#83 Overall)

Watching Grubbs develop over the past few years has been great because you can see that he works very hard and the hard work paid off. The big, burly post from James River was fantastic last year for them and for Team Richmond this summer, and he announced he will be attending Ursinus (D3 PA) next season. He’s a blue collar guy who rebounds well in and out of his area, has good fundamentals in the post and great touch over both shoulders in the paint.

24) [player_tooltip player_id="1091492" first="Spencer" last="Legg"] | 6’7” | Woodberry Forest (#74 Overall)

Legg is a sleeper out of Woodberry Forest that can play multiple positions and has a great skillset for his size. He’s a guy who is very comfortable on the perimeter as he can flat out stroke it from deep, and his size allows him to shoot over top of smaller defenders and make contested shots with the shot clock running down. He’s mobile and can switch on the perimeter, he rebounds well and can handle in transition and attack closeouts too.

23) [player_tooltip player_id="798708" first="Mason" last="Makovec"] | 6’5” | Kellam (#73 Overall)

Makovec has quietly been one of the best players in the 757 the past few years, and I believe Lynchburg got a great piece to start their 2021 class. A versatile forward that can play inside-out, Makovec is strong and athletic enough to bang in the post with bigger guys and skilled and quick enough to take guys out on the perimeter where he can work in the triple threat to get shots off. He’s a three level big who is a walking mismatch and can do a little bit of everything for his team.

22) [player_tooltip player_id="798750" first="Whit" last="Williams"] | 6’7” | Benedictine (#71 Overall)

Williams is another guy who has improved drastically over the past few years, and is also a guy that can be a mismatch problem with his ability to play inside-out. Offensively he has great touch out to the three-point line, he can finish with both hands around the basket and is really good in the high post against the zone. Defensively he has some grit to him as he’ll challenge shots and rebound both in and out of his area.

21) [player_tooltip player_id="1091490" first="Cephas" last="Wilson-Bahun"] | 6’6” | John Paul the Great (#66 Overall)

One of the biggest stock risers this fall, Wilson-Bahun was fantastic with the NOVA Cavs in the CBG Fall Series as he has some school coaches drooling over his athleticism and high motor that he played with. While he’s still pretty raw, he’s a guy who plays uptempo and runs the floor with his guards, he attacks the glass for put-backs and rebounds and he can keep plays alive with his activity. Defensively, he’s a big time rim protector that can come help side or chase down guys for blocks as well.

20) [player_tooltip player_id="798704" first="LaSean" last="Lee"] | 6’7” | Norview (#65 Overall)

Lee is somewhat of an enigma as he was very good in his early days at Norview and Boo Williams, but nagging leg injuries have limited him to just one high school season and he missed all of last year. He’s a throwback style of post technician as he can score over both shoulders, has great patience and footwork in the post and he has all of the moves and counters with his back to the basket to get a bucket. If he can get healthy and show he’s still a force in the paint, he could be a steal at the next level.

19) [player_tooltip player_id="1091489" first="Ariel" last="Goddot"] | 6’4” | Bishop Ireton (#64 Overall)

Goddot is a highly underrated player who doesn’t play on a powerhouse in Ireton, but he does play in the WCAC against some of the top competition in the country and more than holds his own. He’s a walking mismatch as he’s strong in the post, mobile in the open floor and can score the basketball from all three levels. He’s a freak athlete who isn’t afraid to get physical in the paint, and he plays with a great motor on both ends.

18) [player_tooltip player_id="798709" first="Evan" last="Castellanos"] | 6’6” | Hermitage (#60 Overall)

Castellanos had a big junior season at Hermitage and was set to have another good senior season before a preseason injury left him sidelined this year. A stretch four with a smooth shooting stroke, Castellanos is a guy who can make the three-ball off the catch but he can also put it on the deck and get to spots int he midrange where he can make pull-ups and fadeaway jumpers over top of defenders. He has good hands and good feet and a frame that should put on some weight when he gets into a college strength and conditioning program.

17) [player_tooltip player_id="798706" first="Cade" last="Looney"] | 6’8” | Grundy (#53 Overall)

Looney has been one of the top prospects in the SWVA area the past few years, and he had a big junior season for a Grundy team that came just short of a trip to the state finals. The 6’8” Looney is a slender big but he should put on weight moving forward, he has good touch out to the three-point line and he brings good energy as a rebounder and post defender. He’ll stay local and head to Emory & Henry as they make the move from D3 to D2 next season.

16) [player_tooltip player_id="957895" first="Jayson" last="Harris"] | 6’7” | Menchville (#51 Overall)

Harris is somewhat of a throwback style of big man as he’s very strong and physical in the post, and he’s a guy who gets a lot of blue collar buckets on offensive rebounds and short range jumpers and jump hooks. However, he’s improved over the summer on his ability to step out and shoot three’s, as well as his athleticism and ability to play in transition with his guards. He’s a productive guy who’s almost always around a double-double, and he’s a guy scholarship programs would love with his work ethic and the way he brings it every day.
