As we approach the high school season that looks like will actually happen this year, we take a look at some of the more underrated and under recruited lead guards across the state of VA.

[player_tooltip player_id="798749" first="Jakari" last="Wilkins"] | 5’9” | Williamsburg Christian

Wilkins is easy to overlook because of his size, but the diminutive point guard has a huge impact on the game with his ability to create for both himself and others off the bounce. He’s a guy who changes pace extremely well, he has a great middle game that negates his size and he has good vision and a high IQ with the rock in his hands. He’s also a pest of a defender that makes other ball handlers extremely uncomfortable when he’s guarding them.

[player_tooltip player_id="798720" first="Logan" last="Barbour"] | 6’2” | William Monroe

<img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-236402" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/ph/uploads/2017/09/Logan-Barbour-2021-William-Monroe-High-School-300x225.jpg" alt="[player_tooltip player_id="798720" first="Logan" last="Barbour"]" width="300" height="225" />

Barbour doesn’t play in a big market but he’s been very successful throughout his career at Monroe and should be a guy small schools should be all over. The 6’2” lead guard has good size at his position, he’s an underrated athlete and he’s a guy who knows how to play the game the right way. He’s a competitor that plays with a chip, he can make shots and create off the bounce and he’s an easy guy to follow with his work ethic.

[player_tooltip player_id="798746" first="Sterling" last="White"] | 5’11” | Catholic

White has had success as one of the top true floor generals in the 757 over the past few years and every time I watched him with Catholic last year he ran the show with great poise and decision making. He’s a guy who has the ball on a string and can handle pressure full court, he sees the floor well and makes good decisions within the flow of the system and he can break guys down in isolation situations and make things happen. He’s a solid defender as well and he can score it when he needs to down the stretch.

[player_tooltip player_id="957915" first="Manny" last="O’Jo"] | 5’7” | Osbourn

O’Jo may not be the most well known or biggest guy on this list, but he’s one of the best floor generals in Northern VA and should be a guy small schools are all over. He’s an extremely poised guard who handles and breaks pressure, can make shots from well beyond the three-point line and plays with a lot of savvy on both ends. He thinks the game ahead of others and can impact the game in a number of ways.

Hayden James | 5’9” | Heritage Christian

James has seen his recruitment with small schools pick up this summer after a big junior season at Heritage Christian. He doesn’t play at a very big school but he puts up huge numbers with his ability to score it from multiple levels off the bounce and his ability to get hot very quickly. He’s an underrated athlete and a very hard worker, and he’s a guy who can bring it against the best of the best when he’s matched up with them.

[player_tooltip player_id="798710" first="Ricky" last="Goode-Wright"] | 5’10” | James Monroe

Goode-Wright has been one of the best players in the Fredericksburg area over the past three seasons and has already broke the school record for scoring and scored over 1,200 points already. A smooth guard with a lot of shift to him, he’s able to create space off the bounce to get his shot off and he’s got good quickness to get by guys and get to the rim as well. He can make contested shots from all three levels and is a guy who is extremely crafty with the ball in his hands.

[player_tooltip player_id="798718" first="Tekao" last="Carpenter"] | 6’1” | TC Williams

Carpenter is one of the most talented point guards in the NOVA area and one of the most underrated and under recruited guys in the entire state. A 6’1” lightning quick guard that can get in the lane at will, Carpenter is a guy who can score it efficiently and make others on his team better. He’s a three level scorer that is a good athlete and very tough minded, and he sets the tone on both ends of the floor and is a guy others can follow easily.

Isiah Simmons | 5’7” | Monacan

Simmons is heading to Monacan after spending his last two years at Steward School and he should walk into a situation where he’ll be a go-to guy from the jump. He isn’t the biggest guy but he’s very shifty off the bounce, he can make tough shots through traffic and can set the tone on both ends of the floor. He’s a guy who can get hot quickly and take over a game and isn’t afraid of big matchups or big situations.
