Zaylan Chaney Zaylan Chaney 6'7" | SF Legacy Early College | 2022 State SC and Braxton Benham Braxton Benham 6'1" | CG Cass | 2021 State GA , Cass
These two were monsters all night feeding off each other against Christian Heritage, the 6-7 Chaney didn’t have a counterpart that could hang with him so the 2022 riser cruised to 32 impressive points, doing it off the bounce, from 3, and on the offensive glass, he put together a pretty strong all-around summer with the Atlanta Nets and is primed to carry that into the regular season, the 6-1 Benham was a really solid piece for Colonels last season playing in a deep guard rotation, but the 2021 steps into a more prominent role as a combo guard capable of handling the PG duties with efficiency and poise or sliding over and using his explosive lift and quickness to be a force off the wing or spotting up past the arc.
Jax Abernathy Jax Abernathy 6'4" | SG Christian Heritage | 2024 State GA and Cash Hare Cash Hare 6'4" | PF Christian Heritage | 2024 State GA , Christian Heritage
It’s been great to see the fall league help draw out some of North Georgia’s best 2024’s as they attempt to get seasoning before practice opens and these two epitomize that, similar styles, both 6-3, Abernathy showed a wide-ranging skill-set utilizing the dribble drive with some flare against Chaney but also spotting up well when a 15-footer presented itself, he was agile and active on the boards and played with a ton of confidence, similar is Hare, who plays a more physical brand but is no less polished, he’s got a great frame already and uses it to be a factor near the basket be it finishing in tight or clearing the glass, he too can step out and look fluid out past the 3-point line, these two are among a large and good-looking crop of youngsters up in Dalton.
Jase McCullough Jase McCullough 6'2" | CG Pebblebrook | 2023 State GA and Andrew Hopperton, Roswell
In an entertaining OT win over Pope, McCullough and Hopperton both came up big with clutch plays, McCullough is a physical 2023 guard at 6-2 with all kinds of athletic gifts, looking more like a running back out there he can blow by you on the dribble or straight up sky over you to the rack, has plenty of range out to the arc and a smooth handle, when the game was on the line he really got up in Pope’s face and affected the tempo, the 6-5 Hopperton is an intriguing 2021 prospect, long and rangy he was a force at both ends defending the rim and battling on the boards against good size for Pope, with super-stud Michael Fitzgerald off playing football he has looked for more O-chances and definitely can step out and knock down the J and has enough foot speed to use the bounce to create space.
Zach Marinko and Trey Kaiser, Pope
From week 1 to week 6 Pope has seen some incredible improvement from its core, specifically these two, Marinko is a 6-4 2021 product who steps into the role vacated by now-departed Gannon Brown, and he has upped his aggressiveness around the basket over the last 6 weeks, he’s catching on the block and looking to finish more and though leaner than Brown is not shying away from contact, he will be a key (along with 2022 big Jack Dempsey) in Pope’s fortunes, 2022 SG Kaiser isn’t all that big at 6-0 playing off the wing, but he can really get in a groove with his shot, he had a string of 3’s and was like Marinko much more assertive in looking for his offense feeding off of brilliant PG Will Kolker Will Kolker 6'1" | PG Pope | 2021 State GA .
Brandon Rechsteiner Brandon Rechsteiner 6'0" | PG Etowah | 2023 State #193 Nation GA and Jonah Hamilton Jonah Hamilton 5'11" | CG Etowah | 2022 State GA , Etowah
It would be just as easy to highlight forwards Mason Etter Mason Etter 6'5" | SF Etowah | 2023 State GA and Josh Hughes Josh Hughes 6'5" | PF Etowah | 2022 State GA here, who were both tremendous in their own right against TSF, but it was 2023 PG Rechsteiner and 2022 SG Hamilton who showed how high-level 3-point shooters can be the great equalizer the modern game, the pair shot lights out against their highly-lauded opponents and were catalysts in nearly stealing the win, Rechstiner at just 5-11 continues to show the guile and moxie of a veteran 1-man as he handled pretty strong pressure from TSF as they began to realize they were in for a dogfight, Hamilton can be such a lethal force spotting up at the line with his innate and well-schooled understanding of being ready to catch and shoot often negating any recovery options, the Eagles have been a fall highlight with their cast of young and exciting and up and comers.
