Virtual NorCal Showcase

Prep Hoops was invited to look in on a NorCal Virtual Showcase featuring two grassroots programs. The San Francisco Rebels and Dmology. The SF Rebels have a history of producing quality prospects from the area while Dmology an upstart program has some quality prospects as well. Here’s a rundown of the players who participated in the virtual showcase. The players involved are in the 2021 class.

The Forwards

Dj Johnson 6’7 Forward San Leandro High School (San Leandro, CA)

The left handed shot blocker has been playing a lot this summer. He’s known for his rebounding and shot blocking, but I do see some progress in his offensive skill set. His mid-range jumper around the elbow is improved, he looks to take the 3 when open, and his ability to use one or two dribbles to get to the rim are improving as well. The former Moreau Catholic player will fit right into the defensive minded schemes at San Leandro High. He’ll have plenty of opportunities to show his offensive improvements.

Arrish Bendahl 6’10 Forward, Archbishop Mitty ( San Jose, CA)

The 6’10 forward has been working on his range, and footwork in the post, which might set him up well for the next level. The long bodied prospect showed improvement spotting up in the corner from 3’s, and showed a mid-range jumper that could see his stock rise if he can hit them with some consistency. He’s more aggressive in the post area on both ends, and his numbers should go up this season for the Monarchs.

[player_tooltip player_id="946920" first="Kiahn" last="Nice"] 6’7 Wing Sequoia HS (Redwood City, CA)

A long slender wing who I’ve seen before wasn’t quite at his best at this event, nevertheless he did show other ways to get involved by passing to cutters to the basket, and forcing shooters to shoot over his long outstretched arms on the perimeter. He has a good skill set with good success from the 3, he can score in multiple ways.

Ethan Jew 6’5 Forward, Saint Ignatius (San Francisco, CA)

A physical player with a high IQ, his footwork and wide body evens things out when he has to go up against taller players in the post. A hard working player who boxes out well, goes after rebounds, and loose balls. Not super fast but works very hard on the defensive end guarding away from the basket.

The Guards

Devin Sapp 6’4

Sapp played his Senior year somewhere in Pennsylvania. He has returned to NorCal. If it’s confirmed he’ll be playing at Balboa Prep. Sapp looks to be more offensive minded, he put up a good number shots whether driving it strong to the basket, or knocking down shots from behind the 3pt line. He’s a quality combo guard who can have an effect on the game.

Kyle Crawford 6’1 Guard Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco, CA)

Crawford a strong athletic guard who showed his strength in the open court, and taking it strong going towards the basket. He showed some improvement on the perimeter knocking down open 3’s. He rebounds well from the guard position. He has the speed and lateral movement to be a top notch defender.

Darnay Mc Phearson 5’9 Point Guard Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco, CA)

A tough minded guard from the City, has good confidence in his game. Stocky, strong and willing to play the game physical. A strong finisher going to the basket, a quality mid-range jumper, and hits the open 3’s. SHC is stacked with quality guards under 6’, I’m looking forward to seeing this team play.

Donovan Tynes 6’1 Combo guard, Moreau Catholic (Hayward, CA)

This could be the season for the Senior. Tynes brings a hungry attitude to the court, he’s a solid body combo guard who shows he can play either position, his handles are solid to be effective at the pt, he showed patience and a willingness to look for open teammates, on the other hand he hit a few mid-range and 3’s and took it strong to the hoop at this event. He showed himself to be a good on ball defender willing to pick up full court.

The New Comers.

Devin Mims 6’4 Wing Tamalpais HS (Mill Valley, CA)

A good all-around player who works hard on both ends of the court. At 6’4 he has a good skill set that allows him to be an threat when he has the ball. He worked well in the post showing a nice turn around jumper over taller players, he hit key jumpers from mid-range, and took it strong from the wings to the basket. He runs the floor in transition. He’s a quality defender who can guard multiple positions, he’s on Wright’s watch list.

Justin Milch 6’3 Combo guard Terra Nova HS (Pacifica, CA)

Milch showed a good skill set and the ability to run a offense in the half court. He showed good patience and decision making while being an effective passer with good execution on the pick-n- roll. A good size guard with good strength who can be an effective scorer when he gets into the paint. He has a quality mid-range shot, and he finishes well around the basket. He’s on my Wright’s watch list. He should work on improving his handles. Wright’s watch list

Jalen McWilliams 6’4 Wing McClymonds HS (Oakland, CA)

McWilliams is on my player to watch list. This was my first opportunity to see him play. A good all-around athlete who’s value to a team might not show up on the stat sheet. He’s a good player in the open court, he can get out on the wings in transition, finish above the rim, and he can lead the transition break. He doesn’t strike me as a point guard, but he did facilitate, and make good decisions when he had the ball. He’s a solid defender who can guard multiple positions and he’ll mix it up inside for rebounds.

Harrison Carrington 6’6 Shooting guard, Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton, CA)

Carrington is a tall shooting guard who really looks to put it up when he’s open, he did a good job of making defenders aware of the shooter on the court. He didn’t force it, he has few tools that will get him open to shoot, a nice pump fake one dribble shot, a stop n go move that works for him, and he’ll use a dribble drive pull up to get to the paint and shoot over defenders. He’s on the Wright’s watch list.
