We’ve also taken the liberty of watching many games via live stream and replay during the “new normal.” Here is a look at five bigs from the class of 2023 who respectively improved their stock throughout August.
Malik Bowman Malik Bowman 6'7" | PF Bishop Walsh | 2023 MD | Prospect U/Bishop Walsh (MD)
Bowman is not a throwback big man but he has the size to play down low and is a major factor on the boards. He gained valuable experience this summer playing 17U ball and was consistently productive which is a positive sign.
Anthony Davenport | District Basketball Club/St. John’s (DC)
The first thing that you’ll notice when watching Davenport play is that he has tremendous hands. He is adept at catching the ball in traffic and showcases touch when finishing around the basket. This is a good omen for Davenport’s long-term potential.
Marcel Gardner Marcel Gardner 6'9" | C St. Andrew's | 2023 State MD | New World/St. Andrew’s (MD)
Gardner has always been disruptive as a rim protector because of his size, but his offensive game is also coming along. He is now taking and making threes in games which is great to see. As Gardner continues to round out his all-around offensive game, he should become a force.
Tyler Mason Tyler Mason 6'10" | PF Bishop Walsh | 2023 VA | Prospect U/Bishop O’Connell (VA)
Mason is a traditional big man who can score with his back to the basket, protect the paint, and rebound out of his area. Because of his energy, he can produce with minimal touches and this is an important trait for a big to have.
Luke Smith Luke Smith 6'9" | C Collegiate | 2023 State VA | Team Richmond/Collegiate (VA)
Smith is a tall forward with a very solid base skill set that is growing. He is a problem on the low block because of his arsenal of low-post moves but is also able to step out and shoot the three-ball. Smith’s offensive proficiency is an attractive trait that should continue to improve over time.
