Zero Gravity Rumble for the Ring: Stud Scoring Guards

This weekend, I attended Zero Gravity's Rumble for the Ring, one of the first tournaments of the fall season. I attended games at Dana Barros Basketball Club and watched from a number of divisions. Frye continues to get bigger and stronger every single time I see him, and it's paying dividends in terms of his ability to get to his spots on the floor and score the ball. The 6-foot-2 guard was awesome as a three-point marksman this weekend (as always), but I was also impressed with his improved handle and strength on drives to the rim—he did a good job using his body and playing physical while still being under control and getting good balance on his pull-ups. Frye also passed the ball quite well in a Saturday morning matchup for his Expressions squad, and I always come away impressed by his willingness to play hard on the defensive end.     Rugette was one of the more physically-imposing players I saw this weekend. The 6-foot-2 guard was impossible to stay in front of as a downhill driver and got to the front of the rim at will, and the lefty was able to finish at a high clip in the paint, even with defenders draped all over him. The lefty struggles to consistently hit shots from the outside, but he got to wherever he wanted on the court and elevated for layups with ease—when there wasn't enough space for him to take-off, he got to two feet and comfortably found cutters and shooters. Definite college player.     Kay is a flamethrower. The 6-foot guard can shoot off the dribble or off the catch, with range, and with defenders draped all over him. The XL Thunder guard also used the threat of his outside shooting ability to get into the lane on decisive closeout drives—he finished a bunch of reverse layups at the rim and looked comfortable handling contact. The post-grad is going to Kents Hill School this season, where he should be a meaningful player in their rotation before finding a D3 fit when the time comes.     I caught a game of Reardon's this weekend and happened to see him go off in the first half. The 6-foot guard hit tough shot after tough shot—most of which came from off the dribble, contested threes—despite continued defensive pressure and size/length on him. He has a good enough handle to get to his spots on the floor and a knack for comfortably getting shots off even when he doesn't have much space. With a good number of seniors leaving North Attleborough last year, Reardon should be in a good spot to get lots of minutes.     Dasilva is an all-around player who does tons of things on the floor. Despite being only 5-foot-11, he does an excellent job guarding bigger player (as well as his own position) as a result of his strength, lateral quickness, and toughness. Offensively, he can make threes, but he also has excellent quickness off the bounce and is a great leaper at the rim. He doesn't take bad shots, either—he's very willing and able to kick out to shooters or cutters. Dasilva broke the Milford High School single-game scoring record last season (51 points) and should be a big-time player this year.     Johnson is now FIRMLY on my radar after his performance this past weekend. The 6-foot guard showcased a phenomenal all-around skillset for his BNL Elite squad in a tight matchup against Expressions Saturday. The 6-foot guard has the ball on a string and uses his excellent first-step to blow by defenders effortlessly. Then, at the rim, he has a deep bag of finishing moves, really nice touch with both hands, and high level footwork. Once the defense started loading up on his drives and playing in the gaps, the junior impressed with his ability to knock down shots off the dribble, no matter who was guarding him or how significant the contest was. The junior at Providence Country Day should be a major impact player this season.     Augustin showcased his usual scoring ability this weekend for Expressions. In a matchup against Team Sims that came down to the wire, it was the freshman guard's ability to create straight line drives to the rim and finish at the cup that kept his squad in the game. The lefty has great strength and center of gravity on his takes, and defenders seem to bounce off of him in the air. That being said, Augustin can become a different player in the coming years by improving his conditioning—being at CATS Academy should help him do that.     Sebuma was the engine of Team Sims' offense in their Saturday matchup against Expressions. The 6-foot guard is a relentless rim attacker who gets great elevation, takes contact quite effectively, and can finish with touch using both hands. What impressed me this weekend, though, was the sophomore's ability to hit shots from the outside and force the defense to guard him out there. Sebuma has an excellent conditioning level and is in go-mode all the time—I would bet he'll be a big-time player for Bishop-Fenwick this season.
