Midwest Fall League: Week 1 Stock Risers

The opening week of the Midwest Fall league was used to help set balanced teams for the rest of the season and action was highly competitive! In this article I'll break down some stock risers from the high school action at Sycamore High School.

Looking like arguably the top player on the court for his opening game, Brendel came out firing with some confident pull-up 3-pointers where he simply rose up and shot over smaller defenders. Brendel also made a nice drift pass to the opposite corner on a baseline drive when help defense came, a minor play but one that will translate to the varsity level. Expect to hear a lot more about Brendel's name in southwest Ohio over the next three years.

Playing in his high school this morning for the fall league, Recker looked right at home going against a couple of his Aviator teammates in the first game. Recker was an efficient interior scorer who had active hands defensively, jumped passing lanes and was a leading rebounder on his team. That combination of impact earned him a mention as a stock riser from Sunday morning!

Nyame was one of the top slashers I saw on Sunday morning, getting to the rim early and often. Nyame started the game with a coast to coast layup and followed it up with a fallaway shot after his drive got cut off, showing his counters as a slasher. Nyame also used pivots to get around the defense and hit a couple time and space 3-pointers, one where he was trailing the play. Strong overall performance from Nyame for his team on Sunday.

One of the few rising freshman I saw on Sunday morning, Romero certainly doesn't look like a freshman physically with a long wingspan and solid frame for his age. Romero has the physical tools to be an impact defender down the road and did a nice job using his length to contest shots while still giving himself enough space to move his feet latterly. Romero also got comfortable in the mid-range area offensively, knocking down some shots both off the catch and dribble from that spot on the court. Name to watch for the future in the GCL!

Another GCL-South prospect, Kenner is a name I've seen before and he continued to do what I've expected from him which is scoring the basketball from the perimeter. After halftime of his second game Kenner came out firing with seven points in quick succession as he was getting out in transition and hitting shots off the catch. The microwave scoring burst from Kenner was a big boost for his team and he continued to make an impact with baseline drive and scores. Another player I'm excited to track at the fall league this year.
