Fresno, CA - This past Saturday, September 12th, I attended Day 1 of its annual two day event that wrapped up on Sunday, September 13th. The event featured teams from the Fresno/Clovis area, as well as Sacramento, Elk Grove, Selma, and Madera. I arrived for the start of games on day 1 and stayed until halftime of the final game of the day, as I had to get home. This article takes a look at 8 standout combo guards and wing/slashers from the Shootout, with a blend from the classes 2027 to 2029 (seniors to sophomores). Hinton played with both Clovis West varsity teams at the Nike Fall Shootout, and had his standout game in a win over Madera, where he would go for 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. Hinton has a strong handle on the ball, the height and court vision to see over the defense while keeping the dribble alive, has a variety of moves to create off the dribble, using the crossover, wrap-behind, push-cross, between-cross, hesitation, spin-move, and the jab-step and rip through to get going off the wing, uses his strides combined with his moves to get by his initial defender, gets good lift with body control on the pull-up mid-range jumper, is a crafty scorer around the basket, using the euro-step, up-and-under, or reverse lay-ups to evade shot blockers around the basket, and moves fluidly off the ball to get to his shot spots, where he is effective with the 3-ball off the catch. Hinton is a beast on the glass, is a great positional rebounder, can push the pace in the open court, has the court vision to make good reads up the court, or off the drive and kick pass to open shooters, and uses his wingspan and timing to alter shots on the perimeter, as well as deflecting passes, jumping passing lanes, or poking the ball out to get out and run.     The 6-foot-3 wing/guard can light it up from beyond the arc, has the court awareness and play making to find open teammates, and will be called upon to be a key scoring contributor for the Broncos this season, as it has some new faces that it will need to step up and fill the void from last year's seniors that graduated. Madec had a strong showing in the game against Sheldon on Day 1 of the Shootout, where he would finish with 12 points, connecting on a pair of threes, to go with 3 steals, showing his impact on both ends of the court. Madec has solid handles, the moves to create off the dribble to attack the paint, using the crossover combinations, hesitation, spin-move, jab-step into the rip through, and the step-back to get free from his defender, is accurate with the jumper from the mid-range to the 3-point line off the bounce, moves freely off the ball to get to his shot spots, is accurate with the 3-ball off the catch, and is a crafty scorer around the basket, using the floater, euro-step, and up-and-under lay-ups to evade shot blockers in the paint. Madec has great court vision, makes timely reads off the drive and kick pass, to open shooters cross court, to the diver out of the pick and roll action, and up the court off the glass.     The 6-foot-4 wing/slasher is active on the boards, can score from 3-levels at a high clip, and has the decision making to make quality reads with the ball in his hands. Wallace made the move from Natomas to Sheldon for his senior year, and joins a loaded squad with every position filled with depth off the bench, and Wallace would showcase his needed presence on the scoreboard, with games of 9 points and 8 points, in well-balanced team scoring games, going 2-0 on day 1 of the Nike Fall Shootout. Wallace has dynamic handles, shifty moves to get free from his defender, using the crossover combos, hesitation, fadeaway, and jab-step into the step-back jumper to get his shot off, is effective with the jumper from the mid-range to the 3-point line, and is a creative scorer around the basket, with the euro-step, spin-move, and up-and-under lay-ups to score over height in the paint. Wallace crashes the boards on both ends, has the handles to push the ball up the court, quick and active hands, lateral foot-speed, and timing to alter shots on the wing, deflect entry passes or jump passing lanes, and moves fluidly off the ball to get open looks off the catch from three.     The 6-foot-1 combo guard has shifty moves, can create his own shots, can space the floor from beyond the arc, and is disruptive on the defensive end. Granados had a great showing on Day 1 of the Nike Fall Shootout, as he would finish with a game-high 16 points in a loss to the second Clovis West varsity team. Granados has a tight handle on the ball, keeps the dribble alive to probe the defense, has the moves to shake his defender, using the crossover, hesitation, between-cross, behind-cross, and the push-cross to create space from his opponent, is efficient with the jumper from the mid-range to the 3-point line off the bounce, is a creative scorer around the basket with the euro-step, spin-move, and reverse lay-ups in his bag, as well as the floater down the lane. Granados has quick hands and good timing to deflect passes, poke the ball out, or jump passing lanes to get out in the open court.     The 6-foot combo guard has a physical build to complement the perimeter skill set, can score from 3-levels, and has great body control through contact on the shot. Cephus had a big second half in a shootout with Central East of Fresno, as he would lead his team with 15 points, scoring 13 points after the break but fell short in the game. Cephus has a strong handle on the ball, keeps the dribble alive to survey the floor, has a variety of moves to create off the dribble, favoring the crossover, hesitation, between-cross, and fadeaway to get space from his defender, is a crafty scorer around the basket with the euro-step, spin-move, and up-and-under lay-ups to evade shot blockers, moves fluidly off the ball to get to his shot spots, and is accurate with the jumper from the mid-range to the 3-point line off the bounce or the catch.     The 6-foot guard can score in volume from beyond the arc, moves well off the ball, and had a strong showing for Franklin in its opening game at the Shootout. Robinson had a hot start and kept his team in striking distance until his teammates heated up in the second half to make the game competitive, as he would put up 12 points, connecting on a pair of threes, with 10 of those before the half. Tucker had two solid games at the Nike Fall Shootout, going for 13 points, connecting on 3 threes, in a loss to Central East, followed by an 8-point game with a pair of threes, showing he is one of the top shooters from distance in the Section. Miles has dynamic handles, keeps the dribble alive to survey the floor, has good court vision to make timely reads to players off the drive and kick pass, up the court in transition, and to the diver out of the pick and roll action, and is one of the best off-ball movers I have seen in his ability to run off screens, keeps his defender chasing, and a quick catch and release with range from deep on the 3-ball off the catch. Tucker has solid moves to create off the bounce, using the crossover, in-and-out, behind-cross, push-cross, spin-move, and hesitation to get his defender off balance, is finding openings in the defense to pull-up with the middy, and crafty ways to score around the basket among height.     The 6-foot-2 combo guard has the moves to create his own shots, has made major strides in his offensive skill set, and can space the floor from beyond the arc to open up the court. Woodsford has emerged as one of Clovis North's primary scorers with this year's new look squad, and he had his game on full display Day 1 of the Nike Fall Shootout, going for a team-high 18 points, connecting on 3 threes, in a loss to Central East, followed by an 8 point and 6 rebound game in a loss to Sheldon. Widdsford has dynamic handles, keeps the dribble alive to probe the defense, has the moves to create space from his opponent, using the crossover, hesitation, wrap-behind, push-cross, and spin-move to get open looks off the dribble, is effective with the jumper from the mid-range to the 3-point line, and is a craft scorer around the basket with the euro-step, up-and-under, and reverse lay-ups to evade shot blockers.
