As I surveyed the coverage from the loaded Prep Hoops Freshman Showcase. I noticed that some very good performances seemingly slipped through the cracks. Happens every year and I do my best to try and limit its occurrences at such a big event. Oddly enough, the ones that jumped off my notebook seemed to be centered around the Lansing area. Following are five standouts from the capital city (mostly)

[player_tooltip player_id='3723551' first='Emmett' last='Eyde'] 6-0 Lansing Catholic Central Smooth lefty had a good day. A bit of throwback type game. Not overly flashy and played at his own pace. Showed a knack for scoring in the mid-range. Played with balance and knew what to do when he got a defender on his hip. Wired to score, but showed enough ball handling to slide over to the point as well. With a new coach this year and a senior building block already in place on the block. Could have an opportunity to make some noise in his first season. Comes from an athletic family as his older brother is top quarterback on the gridiron.

[player_tooltip player_id='3730478' first='Evan' last='Shapter'] 6-10 Dewitt (pictured) My finger did not slip to zero after a typed the 1. Not a typo, a legitimate 6-10 and probably about 270. I could use every size cliche that has probably already been written... but I'm not. Size or no size, Shapter is just good at basketball. He runs well for his siz- not going to do it. He just runs the well period end stop. He establishes deep post position and doesn't seem to mind contact. Has a soft touch around the basket. Get the ball up to rim quickly despite not having sudden elevation (yet) Shows the soft touch at the rim with both hands. Looks most comfortable with the left though. Improving lateral quickness... in that he looked quicker than when I saw him two weekends ago in this same gym at the Bank Hoops Underclassmen camp. Bigs always develop later than guards and wings, so some patience might be in order here. However, the future is very bright.

[player_tooltip player_id='3666443' first='Terrell' last='Tyson'] 5-11 East Lansing Fast and shifty guard who excelled in the open court. Has good positional size already at the point. Good ball handler who was able to maintain his speed with the dribble. Competed hard on both ends of the court. Quick hands on defense and good positioning. A lot of transition in the recently powerful Trojan program. There is already talented point guard prospects in the 2029 class for East Lansing. Could Tyson be part of the new wave of player to make noise in the shadow of the Breslin Center? It certainly looked like it this past Sunday.

[player_tooltip player_id='3685885' first='Landon' last='Hulik'] 6-0 Owosso I was impressed with Hulik a few weekends ago at the Bank Hoops Underclassmen camp, but he just missed the cut for coverage. I wasn't going to let that happen again. Hulik is point guard all the way with an advanced ball handling skillset. While capable of scoring, the pass seemed to be his first option which was nice to see. At 6-0 has the size to see the court well and over most defenders. Comfortable out on the perimeter and near the rim. Not a blur with ball but showed quickness in small bursts to create space. Seems like it has been a while since I highlighted a player from Owosso. I feel pretty safe in saying this will not be the only time I will cover this player.

[player_tooltip player_id='3517333' first='Bruce' last='Poindexter'] 6-0 Auburn Hills Avondale Aware this prospect is not from the Lansing area. However, I intentionally added "mostly" at the top because I wanted to make sure and get this performance in. His play most certainly warranted it. It's not uncommon for posts to be physically advanced at this age (see above) You don't see it as often from the wing or the perimeter. Poindexter does not resemble a freshman in any way. Big bully ball type of player. However not pudgy at all. Had a thick upper body. Defenders seemed to bounce off him on penetration. Got the basket often with an explosive first step. Was a major threat out in transition. Let's just say this... nobody was stepping in to take a charge here. Moved with extreme force and little regard for his body. Had no problems making plays both at and above the rim. Coming off a semifinal the Yellowjackets graduated a lot of production. Players like Poindexter and others I have recently seen, should allow Avondale go through a quick rebuilding process.
