Beyond the Box Score: Six Texas Prospects Who Impact Winning

Scoring gets attention, but it does not tell me who helps you win. I want to see who defends, rebounds, communicates, and does the work that does not always show up in the box score. Watch enough complete possessions and those players start to separate themselves. They make the extra rotation, chase the loose ball, or take the assignment nobody else wants. These six Texas prospects have shown me they can impact winning without needing to score to do it    Huff brings toughness and physicality to the frontcourt. He talks on defense and gives his teammates a dependable voice behind the play. On the glass, he goes and gets rebounds instead of waiting for them to come to him. Huff competes through contact and does not back away from tough assignments. He does the dirty work, and that matters. His impact is not measured by how many points he scores.     Hunter brings a defensive mindset every time he steps on the floor. He stays composed and does not let pressure speed him up. When possessions get tight, his leadership starts to show. Hunter creates for teammates without trying to force something that is not there. He competes, makes the right read, and understands when his team needs him to take control. Those are winning guard traits.     McCall-Spears plays with a motor that keeps showing up possession after possession. He runs the floor hard and attacks the offensive glass looking to create extra possessions. Defensively, he talks, rotates, and is willing to be the help when somebody gets beat. Around the basket, he brings physicality and finishes through contact. What I like most is that he does not need touches to stay involved. He understands his role and keeps doing the work that helps his team win.     McCarty competes hard and gives you options defensively. Put him against a bigger player and he will battle without giving up ground. His motor shows up on the glass, loose balls, and possessions that should have been over. He takes contact around the basket and still finds ways to finish. McCarty does not need the offense built around him to impact the game. He finds other ways to help you win.     Groff is a fundamentally sound big who understands what his job is and does it. He rebounds his area and gives you a dependable presence around the rim. His effort does not change just because he is not getting touches. When teammates create an opportunity inside, Groff catches it and finishes the play. He does not need the offense to run through him to stay involved. There is value in a big who knows his role and consistently handles his business.     Jasper-Caldwell plays like a wing who understands winning basketball. His length shows up defensively, where he contests shots and will go rebound against bigger players. Offensively, he stays within himself and does not force plays that are not there. He can finish around the basket and gives you options with who he can guard. Jasper-Caldwell does not need the ball to stay involved. He is the type of player a coach can trust because he keeps finding ways to help.
