We recently updated our 2027 class rankings in Virginia, with it being one of the deepest rankings I have been apart of in my 10 years with the Prep Hoops VA site. We will take a look at some of the top players in each region of the state from a positional standpoint, starting with the top 10 guards in the Richmond area.

#42) Cam Claiborne | 5'11” PG | Petersburg

Claiborne may get overlooked at times because he plays on one of the top teams in the country, but there's no denying how talented and important he has been for every team he's a part of. He's a well rounded guard who is a talented shot maker who can drill it from deep and is a crafty finisher around the rim, he has a shifty handle and good vision to make plays for others, he can pick up and guard the length of the floor, and he brings a mix of savvy and toughness you like to see in a lead guard.

#67) Christian Tabb | 6'3” CG | Grace Christian

Tabb is one of the more talented guards coaches should check out in the Richmond area, as he has a blend of positional size and skillset that allows him to score the ball in a lot of different ways. At 6'3” he's a dynamic athlete who thrives in transition with his speed and athletic finishing ability, he can create space using step backs and on pull-ups both in the midrange and from deep, and he is really good getting downhill and finishing around the rim.

#85) Shamir Williams | 6'1” CG | LC Bird

Williams was the breakout player in the Richmond area this past season, as he put up big numbers for LC Bird and emerged as one of the top guards in the area. He's a sniper from deep with a quick release and the ability to hit shots on the move, he can handle pressure and break down defenses to get to spots or make plays for others, and he is a very good defender both on the ball and flying around in the press.

#88) Joel Nicholson | 6'2” PG | Hanover

Nicholson is one of the more intriguing long term guards in the Richmond area, as the 6'2” lead guard has great positional size and length with the ability to create for himself and others. He gets downhill aggressively whether using a ball screen or in isolation to get to spots and make shots at the rim and in the midrange, he sees the floor well and delivers tough passes with both hands, and he uses his length and size well on the defensive end too.

#104) Larry Walker | 6'1” PG | Petersburg

Walker is a player who gets overlooked at times on a national program in Petersburg that had multiple nationally ranked prospects on their team last year, and if he was anywhere else he could be one of the top scoring guards in RVA. Walker is super shifty for the bounce with a tight handle and changes speeds well to keep defenders off balance, he can make tough shots in the midrange and around the rim, and he can work off the ball and knock down shots from deep too.

#120) Chris Lamm | 6'0” PG | Benedictine

Lamm is one of the tougher guards that you will find in the entire state, as he impacts winning across the board and is a floor general who leads by example. He brings toughness and energy on both ends of the floor and is capable of picking up full court, he sees the floor well and is excellent in ball screens with the ability to deliver a lot of tough passes, he can score it efficiently when he needs to, and he brings a lot of grit and a competitive chip every time he's on the floor.

#124) Kaleb Wyche | 5'9” PG | Varina

Wyche is one of the top two sport stars in the Richmond area, as he's been the starting quarterback for Varina's dominant football team, and has led them to three straight state championship appearances as their starting point guard. He's a big time athlete who is quick and shifty off the bounce with great speed in transition, he can break down defenders and put pressure on the defense to make plays for others, and he can score it from multiple levels off the bounce too.

#126) Obi Pinn | 6'2” PG | Godwin

Pinn has quietly been on elf the more consistent guards in RVA at Godwin over the past few years, and he's a player that can fit into multiple roles and will do whatever it takes to help his team win. He's got good size for his position and is a good rebounder and finisher around the rim, he's a knock down shooter from deep both off the catch and walking into it, and he has good feel as a playmaker as well.

#132) Jaylen Hester-Harris | 5'10” PG | LC Bird

Hester-Harris had a great junior season for a Bird team that had one of the deepest backcourts in the entire state, and he's one of the more naturally talented guards you will come across. He has great speed in transition and good burst off the bounce, he can score the ball in bunches from all over the court, and he can pick up full court and is a menace on the defensive end too.

#141) Isaiya Branch | 5'11” PG | S3 Academy

Branch was playing behind some very talented seniors last year at S3, but heading into next year he's got a chance to be one of the top guards in the Richmond area. He's a methodical and high IQ guard who controls tempo and makes everyone better, he can get to his spots using ball screens and makes good reads coming off them or denying them, and he can make shots at a high clip from deep and in the midrange.
