Nick Steen Proven D1 Now, Davis + Frison on Fire, Recruiting Buzz

Mr. Basketball Finalist Nick Steen Nick Steen 6'3" | SG Fulton | 2027 State TN accomplished much as a sophomore in 2024-2025 and then more as a junior this season. Now that Oral Roberts University offered him a scholarship the senior-to-be is technically a D1 hooper in waiting. He could commit to them at any time, which makes him ostensibly a Division 1 basketball player...soon.

What does this mean?

A few things. Nick is currently ranked #31 for us. I think it is safe to admit we were too low on Nick because the trend within the last three years is for Tennessee to produce around 8 Division 1 basketball signees out of high school. [It was 14 before NIL took hold]. If Nick is one of those 8, then we are way off. More likely it is a combination of Nick being significantly too low in our rankings AND 2027 being a deeper class in the Top 30 than both 2026 and 2025.

Why were we low so far on Nick relative to this offer (and the presumed D1 offers to follow)?

Historically, Nick appeared to dominate basketball games with his strength and touch within 8'. Young guys who are stronger than their peers and lean on their strength tend to suffer a stagnation in development because they do not develop skills that other guards must like shiftiness, handle, speed, etc. Steen looks more likely to be a super strong guy who is quicker than you realize. He gets to the free throw line, which is a skill. He has not proven his outside shot just yet. That is something that was holding his ranking with us down some. This past season he played exceptional perimeter defense though. That truly separated him from his peers.

The main takeaway is great for Nick! He accomplished a new goal, and it likely indicates the sky is going to sunshining tomorrow for his basketball life.

Justin earned offers from: Arkansas State, Stony Brook, UAB, Belmont.

Davis Cochran Davis Cochran 6'10" | PF/SF Brentwood | 2027 State #194 Nation TN added D1 offers from: New Mexico, Boston College, Notre Dame, Butler, Kansas State, Northwestern.

TJ Maxwell (Dobyns Bennett) earned an offer from Alice Lloyd College. AAU teammate Griffin Head Griffin Head 6'0" | PG Volunteer | 2027 TN (Volunteer) also picked up an offer from Alice Lloyd. The college is a four-year NAIA school in Kentucky. Incidentally, Kentucky is a state with quite a few NAIA opportunities. The pair are seniors who compete with Tennessee United AAU.
