SJ Group 4 Quarterfinal: Lenape 74, Vineland 49

Second-seeded Lenape took care of its business on its home floor with a runaway win over seventh-seeded Vineland to advance to Tuesday's South Jersey Group 4 semifinal. The Indians were led by their backcourt with senior [player_tooltip player_id='2450726' first='Nolan' last='Barnes'] (27) and junior [player_tooltip player_id='2910156' first='Jaidyn' last='Boyd'] (20) leading the way with 47 points combined.    One of the more electric guards in all of South Jersey, Boyd came out aggressive and never looked back, sparking Lenape to a 10-0 opening run and ripping off 16 first-quarter points to establish what would be an insurmountable lead. Known more for his slashing, he continued a recent uptick in his perimeter shooting, knocking down four 3s and showing unabashed confidence in firing as soon as he saw a sliver of daylight. Boyd would mix in some of his trademark dribble-drives while also using his quickness and athleticism to speed the game up and make plays on the defensive end. As the game continues to slow down for him, the scholarship-level upside gets closer and closer to becoming reality.     One half of arguably South Jersey's most potent backcourt, Barnes extended his senior season with a career-high performance to delight the home crowd. He got started with a 3 on Lenape's opening possession and it proved to be a sign of things to come, as Barnes would go on to knock down 3 more on his way to 27 points for the night. Splitting time on and off the ball, he played with nonstop energy, staying in constant motion to shake free and converting efficiently from there. Barnes is a true knockdown shooter off the catch with the quickness to get downhill off the bounce and a commitment to defending the ball with fervor. While he likely lacks the physical tools to carve out a role at the scholarship level, he looks ripe for continuing a pipeline of productive NJAC players from Lenape.     A quickly-emerging forward who emerged this winter as perhaps South Jersey's best shot-blocker, Johnson showed flashes of what makes him so appealing as a long-term prospect. He racked up 5 blocks with a blend of length, athleticism, timing, and motor. On multiple occasions he showed extra effort to chase down what looked like easy Lenape layups, and he extended that effort over to the glass where he was a consistent factor rebounding outside his area. Johnson wasn't worked into the offense as much as he could have been, but showed solid hands and timing as a dumpoff threat with workable touch around the basket. As he adds strength to his frame and gains reps against higher-level players and athletes, the upside for Johnson prove to be significant.     One of the more prolific scorers across the state this winter, Lawson went out with a bang while scoring 26 points in the playoff loss. A compact guard, he was consistently in attack mode looking to make things happen off the bounce, showing creativity to his handle and footwork to find angles to score in tight confines. Lawson poured in 21 points in the second half, taking on all comers on his way to the rim, drawing consistent contact to get to the line for 14 attempts. He showed flashes as a deep-range shooter with a pair of 3s. He'll need to refine his shot selection and decisionmaking moving forward but Lawson's ability to provide instant offense should allow him to find a role at the next level.     Putting up a smooth double-figure effort in support despite the loss, Thomas impressed with his versatile contributions as a modern wing forward. A long and lanky southpaw, he's light on his feet while covering ground with fluid athleticism in space. He showed workable straight-line ball skills to get to his spots with soft touch as a finisher around the basket. Thomas also stepped outside to show a workable shooting stroke both from the midrange and beyond the arc. He could afford to be more aggressive overall but Thomas' versatility could potentially help a small-college program down the line.
