With the 2025-26 High School Basketball season reaching the new year, many teams and players have made their marks felt across Southwest Florida. Let's examine 5 Underclassmen Guards who have made their presence felt so far this season!    Heading into the back half of the 2025-26 season, Lehigh finds itself with a record of 12-1, in large part due to the contributions of Deo Downs. Deo is a complete point guard who possesses a smooth jumper and great vision to set his teammates up for golden opportunities. Deo's midseason statistics showcase his versatility to fulfill the role his team may ask of him for a specific game, with current averages of 15 points and 5 assists per game. Deo has also chipped massively on the defensive side of the ball with a tally of 3 steals per game, helping him lead the break for an exciting and athletic Lightning team.     While most players in the class of 2030 are preparing to start their high school careers, Eric Dobson has spent his 8th-grade season contributing effectively at the varsity level. Dobson is an aggressive slasher who, despite his age, has no fear when attacking the hoop against larger opposition. Dobson also possesses a motor beyond his years, being a hound on the defensive side of the ball, which is evident by his average of 3 steals per game. Coming off the bench, Eric is also currently contributing a productive 8 points and 4 rebounds per game, helping the Griffiths to a strong 9-6 record.     Few players in Southwest Florida possess unwavering confidence quite like Aidan Bonilla. Only an 8th grader, Bonilla is instant offense off the Griffiths bench, utilizing his speed and quick release to put up points in bunches. Through the first 15 games of the season, Aidan is averaging a productive 9 points per game, while also shooting an efficient 43 percent from beyond the arc. Even more impressively, Bonilla has been able to do all of this against high-level competition, with his Griffiths team possessing a MaxPreps strength of schedule rating of 7.4.     Regardless of class, Corban Copeland is one of the best shooters in all of Southwest Florida. At the time of writing, Copeland has already made 54 3-pointers, putting him 4th in the whole state of Florida. However, the total volume of shots has not seemed to affect Copeland, who is shooting an impressive 45% on these shots from beyond the arc. So far, Corban's 17 points per game have helped his Donahue Catholic to a strong 11-4 record, a very strong start for a team looking to win another District title. Expect Corban Copeland to extend his streak of strong performances heading into the 2026 portion of this season!     Piggybacking off of a productive sophomore campaign, which saw him average 13 points per game, Lil Darius Sotomayor has not missed in his junior season. Heading into the new year, Sotomayor is boasting an impressive 21 points, 5.6 assists, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.6 steals a game, doing it all for his Wolfpack squad. With many key players graduating, Sotomayor has most developed into a do-it-all type player capable of inducing winning, which is apparent in South's 10-5 record at the time of writing. With more basketball left to play, watch out for Lil Darius to continue his strong start to the season.
