Q&A with Kyle Cummings
PHD: How would you sum up the season for your squad?
“We took a huge step in the right direction this year. We lost games the first time around the league by 20, 25, even 30 points early in the year. The second time around the league we cut that deficit to those same teams down to 5, 4, or 3 points. This year we learned how to compete as a program, next season will be about learning how to WIN games.“
PHD: Do you have any fun memories you want to share with us?
“Winning the play-in game on the road is something I will remember forever. This program is still in its infancy and we experienced a lot of firsts this season like playing in the EDC Tournament for the first time.“
PHD: How did your team overcome adversity?
“Before the start of the school year, the two leading scorers from last year’s team transferred out to different schools. Ultimately we had some young guys step up and play a lot of minutes in their place. We faced a lot of adversity having two freshmen step up to guard and play against some of the best players in the East.“
PHD: What are a few things your team improved on this season?
“There are a lot of things we improved on throughout the season! We began to establish a defensive identity, rebounding, and playing together, and our fundamentals improved throughout the season which limited our turnovers and offensive efficiency towards the end of the year.“
PHD: Who are some role players that stood out to you & why?
“ Brett Livingston Brett Livingston 6'5" | PF Horace | 2027 State ND and Kaiden Peterson Kaiden Peterson 6'3" | SG Horace | 2026 State ND coming off the bench did a lot for us. When playing loose Kaiden is a knockdown shooter, and Brett made some electrifying plays like big blocks at the rim for us. Brycen Hoffer Brycen Hoffer 6'2" | SG Horace | 2024 State ND was a guy who did all of the little things and hardly made mistakes both defensively and offensively.“
PHD: Can you talk about your seniors and what will be missed?
“We will be graduating six seniors. Two played a lot of minutes for us but I have to tip my hat to all of the seniors that stuck with the program especially when a new coach came in for their senior year. It isn’t easy buying into a new system but these guys came in every day and made us better. We will miss the leadership they provided but more importantly, I will miss seeing them every day!“
PHD: Who are some up-and-comers to look out for in the future?
“We have a good group of sophomores coming up that should see some varsity minutes next season. Austin Ohleen Austin Ohleen 6'2" | SF Horace | 2026 State ND who played mainly JV and some spot minutes for us on Varsity as a stretch 4 will have a chance to make a big impact next year if he has a good off-season. Jett Collins Jett Collins 6'0" | SG Horace | 2026 State ND is a classic 3-and-D guy who will have a chance as well. Young bucks like Owen Terras Owen Terras 6'2" | SF Horace | 2027 State ND and Ryder Majkrzak Ryder Majkrzak 5'11" | PG Horace | 2027 State ND had an awesome season and received Varsity jerseys at the end of the year. They will also have a chance to earn playing time next year and during the off-season.“
PHD: Who was your best defensive player?
“At the guard spot, we had two guys that we would stick on the other team’s best guards. Carter Evanson Carter Evanson 6'2" | SG Horace | 2026 State ND often started games on those guards and at the end of the year, we tasked 9th grader Aiden Green Aiden Green 6'0" | PG Horace | 2027 State ND to guard guys like Mason Klabo Mason Klabo 6'2" | PG Fargo Davies | 2025 State #240 Nation ND and Isiah St. Romain Isiah St. Romain 6'3" | SG Williston | 2024 ND . He never backed down from the challenge which was impressive. Brady Westphal Brady Westphal 6'2" | SG West Fargo Horace | 2025 State ND ‘s defense improved immensely from last year. He became one of our better TEAM defenders always being in the right spot at the right time and rotated to closeouts with high hands and did things the right way as well.“
PHD: Any last comments/thoughts on the season?
“I want to end by saying that our record in the Win/Loss column didn’t go the way we wanted it to but our growth throughout this season was tremendous. At our end-of-the-season banquet I ended with the quote, “It’s not about whether you win or lose, it’s about how you play the game.” I’m proud of how these guys played the game the right way and I’m excited for the future of Horace Hawks Basketball.“
Best of luck to the Hawks this offseason!
