This article is a five-part series detailing the top 10 players in the Borderland area by position group. The small forwards were assessed by their positional versatility, off-ball movement, and shooting/scoring.
10: Marcus Bennett
10: Marcus Bennett
An athletic wing who made huge strides in his junior year. Bennett goes under the radar because of Eastwood’s top player but the Troopers heavily relied on his defense and secondary scoring. For his improvement, he received all-district honors and rightfully so. By this time next year, Bennett will have the opportunity to rank higher as his role will increase even more next season.
9: Damiran Smith Damiran Smith 6'2" | SG Alamogordo | 2025 State NM
9: Damiran Smith Damiran Smith 6'2" | SG Alamogordo | 2025 State NM
Arguably the best player on a good southern New Mexico squad. Smith is a plus defender with positional versatility on the defensive end to go along with a solid frame. He does his best work when he is playing downhill on offense, but he always finds ways to impact games even if he’s not scoring. If his game keeps developing, he can move into the top five by this time next year.
8: Isaac Chairez
8: Isaac Chairez
An elite shooting wing who provides length and space at the position. Chairez was the second leading score on a solid Andress squad who could take over stretches of a game when his jumper was falling. At his best, very few wings can match his outside scoring prowess. Moreover, Chairez isn’t the type of player who only takes and makes shot when he has space. He showed time and again that he will let it fly with a defender closing out hard on him.
7: Ryu Nunez
7: Ryu Nunez
A great dual-sport athlete who stepped into the role of his team’s best player exceptionally well. Nunez plays to his strengths from a scoring perspective as well as anyone on this list. He has a dependable mid-range game and is a reliable bucket getter when Del Valle needs one. Being that Nunez excels on the football field, his long-term projection as a basketball prospect is up in the air. That said, fully committed or not, he is still one of the best wings in El Paso.
6: Osamudiamen Gbowa
6: Osamudiamen Gbowa
A great utility player on a great team. Gbowa is the epitome of filling whatever role needs to be filled. He can guard an opposing team’s best player and lineup seamlessly between the three and four. Chapin seldomly needed his scoring this year but he was timely and opportunistic when he was given the chance. Lastly, as an on-ball defender, very few players with his height move as well as he does laterally.
5: Atticus Ada
5: Atticus Ada
A long wing with good scoring instincts and flashes of offensive brilliance to prove it. Ada is a true wing who fits the positional mold and not just because of his height and frame. At his best, he is one of the best scoring wings in the Borderland with elite mid-range proficiency. Injury slowed Ada down in his senior year but he’s still one of the best small forwards, healthy or not.
4: Anthony Rubio Anthony Rubio 6'3" | SF El Paso Burges | 2026 TX
4: Anthony Rubio Anthony Rubio 6'3" | SF El Paso Burges | 2026 TX
A sophomore wing with as much upside as anyone in the city of El Paso. Rubio is an elite scorer, who can do it at all three levels. It’s more impressive when you consider his age. I haven’t scouted another sophomore in the Borderland who can score as well as Rubio. Knowing he still has two years of high school ball left; he projects as one of the best prospects in the class of 2027 regardless of position.
3: Lucas Brandon
3: Lucas Brandon
A dependable senior on a 6A playoff team who provided solid wing scoring and length. Brandon was a great glue guy for Eastlake because he could fill a certain role or in flashes, be his team’s best player. He was perfectly suited for the small forward position in high school and can easily play out on the wing at the college level.
2: Brody John
2: Brody John
Another elite scoring wing who flashes high level potential when he is on. John’s length at 6-4 and dependable mid-range game puts him on par with just about every high-level scorer in the Borderland. He can give you 20 on any given night and is an offensive mismatch when his jumper is falling. I expect him to be in contention for the top spot on this list next year.
1: Azaiah Thompson
1: Azaiah Thompson
One of the best players in the Borderland regardless of position. Thompson has great potential as a two-way wing who can be your number one option offensively and a game wrecker defensively. Moreover, he is one of the most reliable 20-point scorers you will find because he is so hard to keep out of the paint. Even if his jumper isn’t falling, he finds ways to put points on the board.
