Stanford is well known for his aggression and physicality throughout the state, but he’s had to take over a larger role on the glass for the Hornets as they lack frontcourt presence. I wouldn’t be surprised if he notches a couple of double-doubles, or even a triple-double, in his upcoming district games as Highland seeks to hold onto their number-one ranking in 4A.
Cole Baca Cole Baca 5'10" | PG Cibola | 2024 State NM – Cibola
Cibola has continued to remain at the bottom of the 5A standings, but Baca has made his mark as their leading rebounder even as a guard. His ability to carve out space underneath the rim and be physical with big men is invaluable to the Cougars, and he’s already notched some noteworthy stat lines with his rebounding and defensive abilities.
Xavier Otero Xavier Otero 5'9" | SG Hope Christian | 2024 State NM – Hope Christian
Otero has burst onto the scene as one of the best combo guards in the state with his recent play, but what has really impressed me (besides his lights-out shooting as of late) is his ability to sneakily grab rebounds on both ends of the court. He’s a 5-6 RPG threat every time he plays and will be on double-double watch during district play.
Brandon Bartlett Brandon Bartlett 6'3" | SF La Cueva | 2024 State NM – La Cueva
Bartlett might be the most underrated guard as far as paint presence goes. He’s a beast on the offensive glass and creates so many second-chance opportunities for a team filled with frontcourt depth. Bartlett is also one of the best guards at finishing around the rim, using his frame and athleticism to create for himself near the basket.
Julian Chavez Julian Chavez 6'2" | SG Valley | 2024 State NM – Valley
Chavez has been one of the best two-way guards in 4A. During Tyler Kozlowski Tyler Kozlowski 5'10" | CG Valley | 2024 State NM ‘s absence early in the year, he took over the team and showed what he could do in every aspect of the game. He very much impressed me with his rebounding as it is not what he is known for but is very much a strong suit for him and something he’s improved tremendously during his career.
Julian Ramos-Hernandez Julian Ramos-Hernandez 6'1" | SG West Mesa | 2025 State NM – West Mesa
Hernandez is sneakily one of the best rebounders under 6 feet tall. He’s been invaluable to the Mustangs’ success as they’ve become one of the state’s best rebounding teams. He sneaks into the paint for offensive rebounds and is quick enough to get to his favorite spots to grab boards. He’s gotten better as a scorer in the paint as well, getting to the free throw line for his efforts.
