Athens Drive High opened things up with a quick barrage of offense in the early going as it looked they would run away with things against Broughton High. 2026 Chase Hardy Chase Hardy 6'0" | SG Athens Drive | 2026 State NC woke the Jaguars’ offense up with some early 3-pointers and it was 10-2 before the Capitals would call a timeout to regroup.
The early timeout didn’t help things for Broughton though as the lead blossomed to 16-6 for the Jaguars as Broughton would call another timeout with 3:28 left in the quarter. Seemingly, the second timeout worked out for the Capitals as they closed out the quarter on a 7-4 run of their own and trailed the Jaguars 20-13 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, the Broughton offense would wake up entirely thanks to the defensive efforts of 2025 Christian Outlaw Christian Outlaw 6'5" | PF Broughton | 2025 State NC . Outlaw would show his paint-stopping ability defensively to boost the Broughton offense and trigger a few key fast breaks that allowed the Capitals to go on a run. 2027 Jordan Page Jordan Page 6'4" | SF Broughton | 2027 State NC would also get his offense going to boost things for the Capitals. They would outscore the Jaguars 16-9 in the quarter, tying up the score at 29 when the halftime buzzer sounded.
In the third quarter, the Capitals took over. The offense would start clicking for Broughton as they took their first lead of the game with three mins left in the third quarter, 39-35. Page had a big close to the quarter with a big putback dunk followed by a 3-pointer to give Broughton their biggest lead of the night, 46-40, at the end of three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Broughton maintained control of the game and kept trying to build their lead, though Athens Drive wasn’t going away quietly. Unsigned senior Chauncey Sumpter Chauncey Sumpter 6'4" | SF Broughton | 2024 State NC had a big close to the game for Broughton High to lift them to victory in the end. Chase Hardy Chase Hardy 6'0" | SG Athens Drive | 2026 State NC and Chay Smith Chay Smith 6'0" | CG Athens Drive | 2025 NC did their best to keep the Jaguars around, but each time, it seemed like Sumpter had an answer. He finished with 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter as the Capitals would win their second straight game in CAP6 action, 68-59.
Page led all scorers with 19 points and was solid at getting rebounds out of the net and create offense for himself and others right away. He’s a young face for his squad but he led with his ability to initiate good action and with his ability to be all over the rim. His putbank dunk put an exclamation point on an efficient performance for Broughton.
Sumpter was another player in the Broughton High rotation who didn’t overdo things and did well at holding his own on the rebounding front. He stepped up in a big way in the final quarter to push the Capitals to victory. He finished with 14 points and a good number of rebounds in the victory.
Outlaw was a solid presence in the Broughton High frontcourt as a rebounder, finisher and shot-blocker. He finished with six points, six rebounds and three blocks to anchor the defense in the end. He battled through a bit of foul trouble, but as he adjusts to different defenders over the next few months, look for his development to trend in a positive direction.
Hardy came out firing on all cylinders for Athens Drive as it looked like they’d pull off an upset. He showed he could attack the basket, knock down shots on the perimeter and get others involved and he’s just a sophomore. He’s a name to track over the next few seasons in NC’s 2026 class.
Smith was a fundamentally sound guard in the Athens Drive rotation who stood out after putting up 16 points. He showed he could operate in a variety of ways, both off the bounce and off the catch, knocking down shots in the midrange and on the perimeter to make his presence felt. He’s another prospect in NC’s 2025 class who got himself on the radar following this game.
