The less glamorous side of the game is often the most important. Today, we shine a light on five of the best defenders from the Break Cancer Awareness Classic. Here are four prospects with the defensive tools and mindset to hang their hat on that end at the next level.
Highlights
Philon has all the tools of a multidimensional defender. Standing 6’9 with a long wingspan, he can corral guards, protect the rim, and eat up space. He has a high IQ for the game and has a high feel for place in time during games. I know this is about defense, but his versatility and IQ are also great tools on the offensive end.
Washington appears on this list thanks to his athleticism and physical frame. The combo forward is long and rangy. When he locks into the game, he can confidently guard 1-4 but struggles with bigger, stronger bodies due to his slight frame. The 6’8/9 forward runs like a gazelle on the break and races well above the square to block shots.
Jones is a physical 6’5 wing whose primary focus is defense. He does all the little things to contribute to a team. He’ll claw for rebounds, collect deflections, and stay in his man’s chest. He may not be the fastest laterally, but he does a good job of containing his man with a smart use of contact.
Davis is a 6’6 wing with a massive wingspan. His football background makes him physical and gives him the footwork to stay in front of his man. He can cause turnovers with his length and activity in the passing lanes. Stout on ball defender who can both ball handlers and keep up with them.
